From Grandparents to Grandchildren
Traditions and Customs from the
Trotuş
Valley
Abstract
In a world clutched by the mirage of the technology,
captive inside its circumference here and now, traditions and customs
are stalked by the danger of passing in the sphere of the archaisms.
The new generation doesn t feel with the same intensity the charm of
poetry overall, let s not forget the popular works which are considered
outdated, connecting them ineluctable with another generation, the one
which is ruffled at any opportunity. Furthermore, the young are importing
different rituals, holidays or customs, even if they exist in Romanian
culture, celebrated on a different time and bearing a Romanian authentic
name.
The losing of national identity is the risk which endangers any
minor culture in this age of globalization that is why the vivification of
the Romanian folklore is a must of the Romanian culture. Rediscovery
of our traditions and customs gives a strength to the patriotic feeling,
awakening emotions/artistic sensibilities and implicit the proud of being
Romanian. We have reasons to be proud: our popular poetry generously
proves that crumb of genius which inspired along the times the popular
poets, capable to poetize any inward feeling: joy, sadness, happiness,
love, pity, mourning, the pain of passing away, homesick, languor etc.
Any feeling can be associated with a specific episode of human
life or a real holiday from the Christian orthodox calendar. Moreover,

any region of the country has its own specific traditions and customs,
which individualize it through garment and language. Our attention
was focused upon native places such as the
Trotuş
Valley, especially
villages like
Agăş, Asău
and the towns:
Comăneşti
and
Dărmaneşti.
Not pretended to have gathered all the versions or the existed customs,
this work wishes to be a testimony over years of a verbal and ineffable
culture.
The beauty of the popular creations and customs existing in this
Moldavian privileged space determined to collect all the works (which
go around, especially in the spoken form and are known by heart by the
old people) and to preserve them in the written form, from a double
motivation: not for losing them and also to be known and learnt by the
young. In this way these works are saved by the night of forgetfulness
and will consist of
a
wellspring
of authentic poetry and a landmark for
the further generations. The culture can be (re)build only on the values
of the past that is why this type of selection defends its issue.
This writing combines the theory with the popular poetry, specific
from the
Trotuş
Valley to bring off a complex perspective upon the side
and the utility of preserving the traditions and customs. This type of
approach comes forward any type of reader, even innocent or compe¬
tent. Starting from the theory towards practice, the reader has the possi¬
bility for better understanding the folkloric phenomena and to build a
connection between the spoken and the written literature.
Any celebration is accompanied in Romania by poetry that is why
Christian celebrations and crucial events in everyone s life were genuine
sources of inspiration for bringing into existence unpublished poetry
which is capable to express the uproar of the emotions coming of every¬
one s inside. Hereby, except the carols, the poems told at the coming
of the New Year, the custom of „playing the bear , are rhymes for
wedding, christening, funeral or local rituals preserved with holiness in
our area. AH these were collected from
Trotuş
Valley and we gave them
a written form in order to gain a permanent character and guarantee
durability over the years.

Romanian folklore has kept within its
traditions a
multitude of
cultural values which attest to our national spirit and identity of the
Romanian people. Through its complexity and depth, out folklore
imposes itself as the corner stone of our written literature and an inex¬
haustible source of inspiration.
The folkloric rhapsode is an exponent of the collectivity to which it
belongs because it gives voice to its sentiments, thoughts and aspirations
which animate its verses. Well-versed with our traditions, this folkloric
architect is reserved with the role of keeping and conveying our customs
and poetry to our descendants.
This collection of folkloric gatherings has assumed a similar role:
that of conserving through the writing the traditions and customs of
the
Trotuş
Valley. We have been acquainted with these customs since
out childhood and through the course of the time, we have assessed that
some of them are lost due to the low interest manifested by our youth
in perpetuating them. Very few children today learn to cite poetry and,
even less, carols, New Year s folkloric songs and wishes. Even if they do
go caroling they read the verses from the paper. And these music sheets
fly away and with them these precious verses of peerless charm. So that
our grandchildren will have something to learn, it is only fitting that we
give permanent form to the folkloric creations. We have been privileged
with these reflections when looking at the uniformed world in which
the majority of our youth lives in and we have considered it necessary to
offer them this book as guide-mark for perceiving our true values: We
find ourselves in a moment of imbalance between human progress on an
technological and economical scale and the spiritual and ideal scale. It is
suggested as urgency to reestablish the equilibrium and cooperation of
the two 18.
Beneficiating from the support of relatives and students who live
in the rural area are we have managed to illustrate these theoretical
aspects with examples from literary creations present in different

Valley. This book surpasses the status of
a folkloric gathering, but it also doesn t integrate with the category
of scientific studies, instead it is a study that befits a more innocent
reader, one existing at the begging of the road who tries to familiarize
himself with these theoretical notions. These examples represent a
worthy proof of the rich traditions and folkloric customs popular in
this geographical area.
The volume before you brings together not only the poetry of the
winter customs, but the traditions and rituals specific to the passing
away. Firstly, we have followed up the authenticity of the poetry we
have collected, in such a way that the written material has been gathered
from credible and relevant sources. A careful look over all the hterary
creations will reveal the creative impulse of our people, which reveals
itself with every verse and in every corner of our country. That is why
G. Ibraileanu considers that cult poetry is the perfection of the folkloric one and
he was perfectly right.
It was an interesting experience for us to rediscover the beauty of
our native land within these verses spoken from the heart of our elderly,
left with the nostalgia of past times, when modern ways of communica¬
tions were
inexistent
and they enjoyed the spoken customs and tradi¬
tions. We hope that the readers will (re)live this exact emotion.
