LIVING HISTORY
Summary
As a tradition, each big tobacco company has a book dedicated to its history written
by outstanding historians or a team of scientists who spent years in search of documents,
facts and biographies. Bulgartabac has also come into possession of its own book but
in this case its author is the company s long standing president
-
a fact, which
automatically turns the reading from a dry material into an authentic and fascinating
story about the most successful years of Bulgarian tobacco monopoly.
In a captivating and emotional manner Dimitar Yadkov tells about the company s
golden ages when it is amongst the industry giants trading over
130 000
tons of tobacco
and
90
billion cigarettes annually. He also recounts of tobacco monopoly s history and
the
ups
and downs of the country s tobacco industry from the beginning of the last
century when leaf-tobacco accounted between
70-80
percent of Bulgaria s exports
and was justifiably referred to as Bulgaria s gold.
Naturally, the primary focus of the book are the two most dynamic and successful
decades in Bulgartabac s history. Thanks to the notes, which the author had been putting
down during his extensive travel, in over
400
pages an exceptional time was brought
to life, marked by creative upsurge, enthralling enthusiasm, commitment to technology
and audacious mastering and application of industry s last innovations. In the years to
follow many modern cigarette and leaf-tobacco facilities were built and the company
was firmly established as a leader in the tobacco industry with a worldwide reputation.

with

tons of tobacco; the record
94
billion
cigarette output was achieved in
1985.
The annual export earnings from tobacco
products reached US$

billion and cigarettes ranked No
1
and tobacco No

on
Bulgaria s list of exports.
For decades Bulgartabac supplied its socialist s sister-nations with tobacco products
-
the Soviet Union alone obtained more than
50
percent of its tobacco-leaf import and
80
percent of its cigarette import from Bulgaria. But in those years, when socialist
Bulgaria had a centralized and planned economy, Bulgartabac s managers acted in
conformity with market economy s rules and conquered new market places. Bulgarian
cigarettes were smoked in Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Tunisia, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Somalia
and Cyprus and Bulgarian leaf-tobacco was sold to nearly
40
countries all over the
world. An unprecedented cooperation in all spheres of the tobacco industry was
established with the major American companies. Large-scale and multiple initiatives

for cooperation in tobacco-growing in India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Zimbabwe, Angola,
Mozambique, Cuba and Nicaragua were carried out.
No contest that thanks to the huge socialist market and the company s structure,
which united tobacco science, production and trade, Bulgartabac was catapulted into a
prominent position in the international tobacco arena. For many years small Bulgaria
competed with the US as the world s largest cigarette exporter and ranked seventh in
the world as tobacco leaf producer after countries with multi-million population as
China, the USA, Brazil, India and Turkey. Bulgartabac was unique
-
there was no
other tobacco monopoly with such a tiny domestic market but such enormous export
volumes. Only

percent of the tobacco and about
18
percent of the cigarettes produced
in the country were designed for domestic consumption.
However, that success story was unthinkable without the contribution of thousands
of people working within Bulgartabac s system. That was a time of integrity,
accountability and continued growth when people s creativity and initiative changed
the pattern of the company, closed the team s ranks and enhanced the spirit and self-
confidence of the employees. During those years a uniquely dedicated culture was
built together with over

holiday centers both at the seaside and in the mountain,
along with three prophylactoriums. The housing problem of all people working within
that system was solved and a mutual aid fund for interest-free credits was established
as well.
For twenty years, from
1972
to
1991,
Mr.Yadkov was running Bulgartabac with
idealism and enthusiasm and energy. Under his leadership the monopoly maintained
trade relations and cooperated with
130
companies in
36
countries throughout the
world. The Bulgartabac s president was elected member of CORESTA board for
12
years and for four years served as its vice-chairman. No surprise that the book, like
every chronicle of living history, is full of his personal impressions from meetings
with presidents of tobacco giants and legendary personalities in the tobacco world,
reproducing the atmosphere in which family companies was fast becoming obsolete
but personal relationships still formed the basis of the big business and contracts for
millions of dollars were concluded by a handshake.
In that respect the book is more than personal memoirs and a corporate history. It
is also a precise picture of the global tobacco community of the
1970s
and
1980s,
just
before globalization and the wave of mergers and acquisitions to drastically redraw
the world tobacco map.
There are books that must be written. Or rather time periods of a company s history
that needs to be told. In order to be perpetuated. Because there were too many human
destinies and biographies intertwined in it. And because memories grow pale while
the written prose stays. In this sense, Bulgartabac and its people deserved that book.
