Local Counterculture. Peace, Love and
PRL
(a commentary to temporary exhibition)
In the late sixties and the early seventies of the 20th century, the Euro-Atlantic part of the
Globe experienced a revolt which questioned tradition and authorities, and, at the same time
showed new development possibilities of a man, society and art. This movement is nowadays
referred to as counterculture. Flower Power Revolution, with its return to nature philosophy,
the flower power pacifist doctrine, with peace, love and freedom slogans, did not omit socialist
Poland (the Polish People s Republic
-
PRL)
as well. In a communist-governed country the
counterculture, hippie fashion and lifestyle had their own character and other socio-cultural
and political context than in the West. It was of considerably smaller dimension and it referred
also to a different, rustic and rough everyday reality.
Despite these differences, the common feature of contestation attitude in the West and in
Poland were the resistance to government, social conventions and opportunistic attitudes,
pursuit of widely understood freedom and, finally, the attempt to create an alternative reality.
The image of the local youth counterculture limited to selected cities of the Kujawsko-
-Pomorskie region, some people, places and events appeared to be interesting for us for the
purpose of conveying the climate of this epoch.
The alternative attitude and culture of young people clashed against the official culture,
traditional adults world, censorship and accusations from the government. The house, school,
university, army were the most frequent spaces of interaction. The counterculture functioned
in some youth clubs
-
students , company s, residents and cafes, concert halls, stations, parks
and squares as well as private houses.

The alternative culture manifested itself most clearly by means of music. Rock and roll

music and lyrics recorded on a vinyl record

was the basic transmission channel of ideas and
attitudes. There were many active rock groups in Kujawsko-Pomorskie region at the time and
some of them represented a more countercultural (hippie) image. Unfortunately, in those times,
it was not possible for them to have their place in a wider public space. Amateur theatrical
movement which developed mostly in Bydgoszcz and
Toruń
universities, was of great
importance as well. Protest and contestation are found also in literature, in particular, in poetry
(Ryszard Milczewski
-Bruno and Edward Stachura).
The alternative youth culture had its own outstanding artists, the graduates of the
Secondary School of Fine Arts in Bydgoszcz and the Faculty of Fine Arts at the
Nicolaus
Copernicus University in
Toruń.

The sixties and the seventies, the years rich with events and full of counterculture
atmosphere, is the explosion time of creativity and imperative to act against . The ideas of this
social revolution, in different proportions and uncontrolled doses, diffused, in time, into the
official culture. They started even functioning, somehow naturally in circles unfavourable to
the hippie revolt; finally they reached politics. Protest and rebellion in art, clothes, music and
style became our reality.
