Doktorov explores a wide range of issues concerning the formation and development of sociology in the USSR and new Russia. The author proposes and argues the point of view according to which Russia s modern sociology is not a sequel or revival of pre-Revolutionary one, but is the result of the second birth of this science in the context of Khrushchev s political thaw . The central theoretical construct of historical analysis that is carried out in the book, is the concept of generations of Soviet/Russian sociologists. In particular, it considers the stairway of generations , which covers all occupational cohorts working in Russian sociology at this moment. As the empirical base of this project, B. Doktorov uses a large number of deep and detailed biographical interviews with sociologists, many of which he himself conducted. He interviewed sociologists by e-mail. Attention is mostly paid to the study of biographies and works of scientists who represent the first four generations of sociologists. In general, B. Doktorov introduced and justified the new biography focused paradigm for the study of history of contemporary Russian sociology. This approach allows to significantly extend the problem field of historical research and to respond to challenges that lie outside the traditional institutional study of the past of Soviet/Russian sociology. The book can be useful to researchers working in different areas of sociology, to teachers of the history of Russian sociology, and to students that learn sociology. At the same time, it s addressed to a broader circle of readers — historians, cultural scientists, and journalists, as well as anyone interested in the life of the Soviet/ Russian society during the second half of the concluded century and the beginning of the new one.
