SUMMARY
The publication deals with the personality of
Závis
Kalandra
mainly
as an outstanding representative of the Czechoslovak leftist journalistic
scene of the first half of the 20th century on the background of
approximation of the political-cultural happening in Czechoslovakia
in an international context of those days. It concentrates on his
journalistic activity from its beginning in the
1920s
up to his
journalistic profession practice restraint in
1948
and on the basis of its
analysis the book tries to span the author
s
opinion changes in their
complete complexity and development as well as the happenings in
Czechoslovakia in the spotlight of worldwide-reach events. In three
larger parts of this work,
Kalandras
life and work and the political
and later cultural
publicistic
of
1926-1947/1948
are successively
characterized. First of all,
Kalandra
is focused at on the basis of the
interpretation of his publication activities in the students magazine
Avantgarda
(in
1926-1929/1930),
which is a proof of his early interest
in social-cultural events of those days, here concentrated on the
problematics of the school politics in the between-war Czechoslovakia.
Next part of the text deals with
Kalandras
journalistic activity in
Communist Party s prominent press
(Rudé právo, Haló noviny,
Tvorba)
in the
period
of
1929-1936
interpreting the events of those
days through the eyes of a Communist Party member with stress
on the idea of an international revolution as the means of general
remedy and with stress on highlighting events in the Soviet Union
as an example worth following on the background of a latent menace

of a new world war conflict. The following part of the publication
restricted by the years
1936-1937/1938
on the basis of an analysis
of
Kalandras
fundamental newspaper contributions shows his
different view on a limited range of political topics in comparison
to the Party s explanations, it also shows the opinion gap between
him and the Party highlighted througK his exclusion of the Party in
1936
and through establishing his own periodical
Proletar,
which
was highly critical towards the Communist Party. It also offers answers
to the set classification of
Závis
Kalandra
on the opinion and political
level to the circle or die so called trockists, to his relationship to the
Soviet Union, to die stalinistic situation there in token of repression
towards the so called opposition as well as answers to the key-
problematics of an international revolution.
Kalandras
publicistic
activity of this period as a combination of an outstanding division
and actually logical result in terms of its previous development
went through another change in the periodical
Přítomnost.
The end
of publishing of his own anti-Party press
Proletář
at the end of
1930s
led to effort to presenting objective analyses of the that-time
international events together with warning against Hider s Germany s
aggression carrying a real danger of war in itself. His publicistics,
remarkable because of its change not only on the level of topics, written
in accordance with the redaction circle of
Přítomnost
personalised
by the liberal democrat Ferdinand
Peroutka
or die non-conformal
between-war journalist
Milena Jesenská,
led to publication in periodics
of die leftist democratic political parties of die National Front in the
after-war period. The last chapter of die work s third part brings
near the events of the
1940s,
as a result of Kalanras tragical fate
only in the span of
1946-1948,
and his journalistic activity in token
of protest against Communist Party s politics, in token of warning
against reaching its power monopoly, in token of appeals to defend
die democratic freedom in Czechoslovakia and appeals to peace
co-operation of all world countries without wars and violence. In
comparison to
Kalandras
early works of die
1920s,
it becomes a
priceless proof of the authors significant opinion change. The fouruS
part brings closer first
Kalandras
relationship to surrealism and after
diat his cultural publicistics devided into the spheres of literature,

theatre and Czechoslovak and worldwide cinematography. It offers
Kalandra s opinions on cultural events of the first half of the twentieth
century, on specific creative initiatives on the Czechoslovak and
worldwide cultural scene, whereas mainly
Kalandras
contributions
of the end of
1940s
are a priceless proof of culture s and artistic
creation
s
freedom defence from the pressure of the Communist
Party s power ambitions as well as they are a proof of author
s
versatile
topic range and considerable span of works. The final part of the
publication brings a conclusion of collected pieces of knowledge
together with a highlight of the
intelectuais
remarkable opinion
development during the period of his journalistic activity.
