SUMMARY
This book is a personal testimony to the author s com¬
mitment to the research of contemporary local and national
themes. It is a subjective chronicle of her developing scholarly
interests which were always somewhat broader than those
imposed by academic discipline. At the same time these texts
reflect the objective fact that her scholarly investigations have
been strongly influenced by the institutions which employed
her: The Institute for Tourism in Zagreb (which specialises in
the applied research of the tourism phenomenon) and the
Ivo
Pilar
Institute in Zagreb whose goal is a systematic study of
Croatian society.
Considering that the author entered the field of the social
sciences through tourism, it is no wonder that the first text in
this book focuses on weekend homes (vifandice) and discu¬
sses the latent function of secondary homes in a socialist
society where owning a weekend house became a feature
of what was called social reality . However, her study of the
latent function related to an aspect of social life soon led her
to a closer understanding of social conditions and their de¬
velopment in various parts of the country. A search for the
hidden content of the visible lies behind the second text in
this book in which structural social developments are studied
analytically in the national-regional political context of cen¬
tral
Istria
at the very beginning of Croatia s independence.
The third text investigates the symbolic meaning of the tourist

emblem or logo of Croatia created in the early nineties in or¬
der to promote the international affirmation of the economic
identity of the country. The text aims to be a strategic view
of Croatian tourism in the making while the state, although
recognized internationally, was still not in full command of
parts of its territory. A broad approach to the applied study of
a sector in the making
-
tourism
-
now facing strong inter¬
national competition
-
led her to consider the need for com¬
parative studies which led her to consider Spanish, Greek and
Austrian concepts of marketing
-
and open the fourth, tou¬
rist theme of this book. This theme discusses the typology of
strategic documents which can reflect a real need for qualita¬
tive changes in the tourist sector in the process of transition
at a period of dynamic international research, at a time when
the process of peaceful
reintegration
reflected the strategic
resolve of the state to try to integrate itself in the making of
a new global political order. This is followed by a text pro¬
posing the rational need for economic regulation in tourism
and for its evenly spread development on Croatian territory.
Finally, the methodological text which closes the first part of
the book, describes the development of instruments for the
control of the quality of services at the level of tourist destina¬
tions
-
reflecting a shift in the author s academic interests now
mainly focussing on socio-economic themes. This text shows
her awareness that at the beginning of the 21st century the
Croatian tourist product has entered a post-mass phase and
must look for a new niche on the global tourist market. Last but
not least, this text reflects her wish to summarize the efforts
invested into developing the instruments of this research by
all the scholars of the
Ivo
Pilar
Institute in cooperation with
partner institutions: the Croatian Chamber of Commerce and
Croatian Radio&Television.
The texts collected in the second section of the book are
of a broader socio-economic nature and derive
de
facto from
her research done in the framework of various projects at

the
Ivo
Pilar
Institute. Unlike the essays in the first section of
the book, which are not arranged chronologically and show
the interdisciplinary progress of her career primarily in the
field of tourism, in the second section the texts are arranged
according to their theoretical reach . It is thus no wonder
that the section is introduced by a discussion of self-managing
post-modernization, the key social code which in her opinion
accommodates the western process of post-modernization
to the Croatian social reality. Indeed, an understanding of the
vulgar context of broader structural processes constituting
the reality of modern Croatian society, is the principal theoret¬
ical basis of all the investigations which she has undertaken in
the last ten years as practical projects. This is why she placed
this short concise summary of her basic theoretical beliefs at
the beginning of this section. The essay on the socio-economic
and identity markers of the inhabitants of
Lonjsko polje
is
based on her belief that development cannot be divorced from
the characteristics and abilities of the local social structure,
and is published here as an affirmation of her interest in local
development. The central text of the second section discusses
the privatization of the Croatian hotel industry and is almost
certainly one of the first scientifically categorized evaluation
papers about privatization in Croatia.
It is interesting to note that

although it was published in
2004 -
It still seems to have retained its relevance probably be¬
cause it deals mostly with the privatization of the firm
Sun¬
čani Hvar
on the island of
Hvar.
The recent text that discusses
the use of state subsidies to small and medium firms points
indirectly to problems which the weakening of the democra¬
tic credo of good management is creating in the network of
small and medium firms created in the period of transition.
Finally, concluding remarks about the development of the Vu-
kovar-Srijem county show that a simple analytical operation
can present the social costs of post-war development on the
farthest eastern borders of Croatia in a relatively precise way.

These
texts clearly show the extent of the author s inter¬
disciplinary approach used in her research and her efforts to
use it in her analysis of Croatian society, but also in our un¬
derstanding of wider, even global conditions in which it func¬
tions as a living structure and strongly interacts with them.
