SUMMARY
The monograph Chapters from History of Central European Region in 19th and 20th cen¬
turies is homage for the
70
years jubilee of
Dušan Kováč,
one of the most outstanding
Slovak historians.
PhDr.
Dušan Kováč, DrSc.
belongs to the first generation of the historians in Slovakia
who devoted systematic attention to the world and European history. The knowledge of
the complexity of historical development and the overview he gained from this study led
him later to research the questions of Slovak history, the variability of the Slovak-Czech
relations and the development of the German minority in Slovakia. In the last decade he
has joint both of his previous research fields: he started to interpret them in the historical
categories of nationalism, of building and developing the identities and extended them
also to the field of historiography and the discourse on history. The rational approach to
the research and the constant search for the new ways of professional growth brought him
into a position, where he could not only write the history of Slovakia and Central Europe,
but also develop the new organizational possibilities for the historical studies and for the
broadening the international contacts.
The monograph chronologically expands through the 19th and 20th centuries and covers
the region of Central Europe with Slovakia as the case study. Its chapters have written the
historians of Slovakia and from abroad, too. The themes they have dealt with were their
own, but simultaneously also of interest of
Dušan Kováč.
The first part of the book presents the texts dealing with the theoretical and methodologi¬
cal problems of the historical science (L.
Vörös,
J. Viceník)
and also with the philosophi¬
cal approach to the history and its phenomena
(J. Dubnická, J.
Baer). The chapters in the
part two are aimed at historiography. A. Suppan shows the new challenges and hindran¬
ces, which the contemporary era places before the development of the historical science.
The co-authors F. Hadler and M. Middell are looking at the perspectives of the Central
European history from the transnational point of view and in this connection comment the
discourses taking place at the University of Leipzig. What is the Central Europe, which
countries belong there and how this concept developed at the beginning of the 20th century
in the contest between the science branches and the politics, is the theme analysed by V.
Goněc.
The following two chapters deal with the partial questions of the Slovak historio¬
graphy development at the beginning and the end of the 20th century: K. Holly s text treats
the ideology-political aspect of the historical thinking of J.
Botto;
A. Hudek writes about
the forming the historical picture of the communist regime disruption in the Slovakia.
Modern nation-building, nationalism and their connotations till
1918
is the frame for the
third part of the publication.
D. Škvarna
is aimed at some basic and determining factors of
the 19th century Slovakia and at the role, which they played in the forming of the Slovak
historical consciousness and memory. The goal of T. Pichler is to show

the problems of historically conditioned transition of Hungary from the stage
of corporative society to the society of the citizens. P.
Šoltés
investigates the construction
and the spreading of images concerning the ethnic structure of Hungary in the frame of

9th century. On the background of the minority and assimi¬
lation policy of the Hungarian government L.
Szarka
analyses in the time of Dualism the
question of the Czecho-S
lovak
mutuality. The fundaments of the changing the standpoints
and loyalties of the Slovaks during the WWI, explains in the context of political, economic
and social repercussions of the war
G. Dudeková.
Certain shifting to another part of the
book forms the text of M. Zemko aimed at the analysis of the monthly
Prúdy
(Streams)
contribution to the developing of the Czecho-Slovak mutuality among the Slovak youth
and intellectuals. He briefly sketches how the pre-war expectations changed to the reality
of the newborn Czechoslovak Republic. Slovakia in the Czechoslovak state, its inner
problems and especially international context is the main theme of the last section of the
book. R.

opens it with the detailed picture

based upon the archival materials

the political and moral profile of
Ľ. Bazovský,
who in contrast to his openly proclaimed
pro-Slovak attitudes served the irredentism and the Magyar government. The next three
chapters deal with another foreign phenomenon, which had had a negative influence on
Slovakia before and during the WWII

with Germany:

analyses the place of
Slovakia in the inter-war period and mainly at the eve of the war in the German politics;

Hallon
follows
-
based upon the newest archival research
-
the development of the
German-Slovak economy relations in
1939;
from the other side, from the point of view of
the Slovak ruling elites represented by the daily Slovak (Slovak) shows P. Petruf their atti¬
tude towards Hitler s the new Europe , the new European order and
the living space
(Lebensraum) in
the years
1939-1940.
The issue of the war time Slovak state closes I.
Kamenec
with till now a lesser theme
-
with the building and the short activities of the
Cultural Council and with the formulating of the so called
Lomnicky
Manifesto in
1940.
The other two chapters have again a common base
-
the minority question:
E. Ivaničková
treats it from the view of the Great Britain;
Š. Šutaj
deals with the Hungarian minority
and analyses the Czechoslovak-Hungarian debates on the inhabitance exchange after the
peace treaty in
1947.
The special chapter is written by S.
Michálek,
who discloses the long
lasting debates between Washington and Prague in the case of the Czechoslovak mone¬
tary gold. J.
Pešek
returns with his theme to the inner problems and on the example of
the relations between Slovak communist party and the Czechoslovak communist party in
1948-1968
proofs that the controversies and their solutions were against the KPS, which
was in the line of the Prague centralism. The similar base has the chapter by
M. Londák,
who opens the question why the Slovaks in
1968
wanted the federal state. He searches
the answer in the whole post-war development and concentrates on the economic aspects.
The epilogue of the monograph is not a text chapter, but the selected bibliography of
Dušan Kováč (I. Mikuličová).
