SUMMARY
The archaeological characteristic of Scythian monuments of North-Western Crimea, which are dated by
7*-
4th cent.
B.C., let to allocate few chronological groups. The earliest group consists from two tombs of early-Scythian culture. The
second group is submitted by much bigger amount of funerary complexes, dated by second half of
б 1
-5*
cent. B.C. It
testifies that an emersion of Greek Kerkinitida and Barbarian s arrival gives the assumptions to the composition of special
cultural and historical area in the west part of Crimean peninsula. Its formation begins in the second half of 5th cent. B.C.
The third group, which is the biggest one, refers to 4th -first decade of 3rd cent. B.C.
The northwest cultural and historical area of Crimea was divided in two parts in

first decades of 3rd cent. B.C. The
coastal part became a zone of settled agriculture of a Greek type in the second half of 4th cent. B.C. The inhabitants of this
area were mostly Greeks and Barbarians.
Barbarians were involved in the process of
chora
s works firstly by virtue of exchange, later they took a part in it directly
from the second half of 4lh cent. B.C. The internal and eastern part of northwestern Crimea had represented a Scythian ter¬
ritory, which is well known only by barrows and tombs.
It is possible to pay attention on a change from nomadic life s style to semi nomadic in the second half of 4th cent. B.C.
The eastern extremity of Tarkhankut s elevation is mostly significant in this way. The big amount of Scythian burial mounds
with firstly appeared family s crypts, can testify in a favor of semi nomadic type of living. Therefore there is a possibility of
existence of settled settlements with perennial life s circle on this territory.
The main interest is caused by the group of tombs, accomplished by Scythians rite, but with polished ceramics, which
was decorated with carved ornament. This ornament was one of the characteristics of Kyzyl-Koba culture and was singled
out from all the archeological material by VS. Olkhovsky. This type of ceramics is not homogeneous and distinctive for
Kyzil-Koba culture basically but also for its eastern variant. Its emersion testifies the steady links or maybe cultural unity
of barbarian population s substratum in steppe s and piedmont Crimea in Scythian time. Anyway, this group of tombs does
not match with usual monuments, which are traditionally were referred to Kyzyl-Koba culture.
The social content of population was not too compound in Northwestern Crimea of 5th cent. B.C. Their principal tribe,
the Royal Scyths , ruled the vast lands occupied by the nation as a whole (Herodotus
4.20),
had occupied the part of con¬
tinental steppes and steppe s Crimea. Their territories extended till the mountains to the south of Crimea, and to the east till
the modem Kerch s peninsula, which had a name of Bosporus Cimmerian in ancient times. The reclamation of Tarkhan-
cut s elevation by Scythians is noticeable from the second half of 6th -beginning of 5th cent. B.C. The first Scythian burial
mounds were poured here in the second and third quarter of 5th cent. B.C. The same period of time is noticeable by the first
appearance of graves in stone cists.
The western Crimean group of steppe s Scythian culture began it s formation in the

posed in 4th century

It was characterized with the predominance of grave pits and stone cist and western orientation
of buried ones. The first appearance of funeral constructions in a form of stone crypts, can be considered a borrowing from
Greek tradition, but it is still matches with family s structure of Scythian society of the second half of 4th cent. B.C.
The social structure of Scythian population opens a question about an existence of Scythian aristocratic clan in North
-
Western Crimea in 4th cent. B.C. The unexcavated barrows near the village Vorobievo and Krasnovka, is interesting in this
Way- It contains from few big mounds. It is very possible, that the finding of gold grivna next to the settlement Apan-Sarcha
s connected with these mounds. Another archeological and topographical version gives an assumption that this burial
fflound is related to the rich aristocratic grave in the barrow
Chayan.
ft is possible to speak about the Greek-Scythian relation on the territory of north-western Crimea, looking on this situa¬
tion from the steppe : only from the position of the assessment of potential of Scythian tribes. For example, the establish¬
ment of Scythian protectorate above Kerkinitida in the first part of V cent. B.C. is presumable, taking in account military
Possibilities of Scythians. This fact is witnessed by the tombs of heavily armed and lightly armed warriors

of Scythian barrows of north-western Crimea. This potential had lasted till the end of V- beginning of
