THE ORIGIN
OF THE ALBANIAN LANGUAGE
Albanian language is a separate branch in the family Lido-
European group of the so called Satem , along with the Indo-
Iranian, Armenian and Baltic-Slavic. In this group, in the
Medieval times, the guttural sounds k and g had passed to
fricative th and dh, instead of Centum whereas those fri¬
cative are united with para-fricatives. But, in Albanian lan¬
guage has the cases, when kept gutturals fricative, which is
certified that at ancient times it was in the row of the Indo-
European central.
Many of scientists in the world consider that the Albanians
are the predecessors of half Illyrian Romanized , and their
language represents the first stadium of Romanized Illyrian,
this process had gone on to the end. According to the Austrian
Albanologist,
Norbert Jokl (1877-1942)
Anyway, the rem¬
nants of heritage of Balkan ancient languages, Illyrian and
Thracian, are closely related to the Albanian language.
The Danish Indo-European Albanologist,
Holger Pedersen
(1867-1953)
had expressed the thought that Albanian language
stand somewhere amid Armenian and Baltic-Slavic; while
N.
Jokl stresses that the Albanian language during a historical
period, having relationship with the Persian and ancient
Armenian. The Albanian philologist, Eqrem
Çabej
(1908-
1980)
had pointed that the Albanian language, to a consi-

derable
issues are among the ancient Baltic-Slavic, but par¬
tially with Celtic, German, Greek and Armenian.
The Philologist and Albanologist with the Serbian origin,
Henrik Barié
(1888-1957)
approves that in the era of mother
Indo-European language, for sure there were first dialects
developed in history, there remained two sectors: Albanian and
Armenian, while other sectors, Albanian and Armenian, while
the other two sectors were Thracian Albanian) and Phrygian
(closer to Armenian) are obliterate.
According to the philologist and Balkanologist Milan
Budimir,
(1891-1975):
the first of Albanians are in the group
of Pelasgic Indo-Europeans of ancient Balkans.
Nevertheless, the most ancient words of Albanian language
prove that it had deep roots in the Balkans and European since
Proto-Indo-European. For the ancient period of Albanian
language, it s the proofs of the number of similar words, or
identical with the words of Baltic-Slavic (Lithuanian, Latvian
and Slavic), but even the fact that Illyrian words, according to
the period, are

important, as the philologist, Shaban Demiraj, that: The equa¬
tion Pelasgic-Illyric, doesn t show to have been proved, either
historically or linguistically and that the foundation of the
Albanian language should have appeared in the period within

centuries in our era. This means that many words of
Indo-European root have been transformed up to this period.
About the age of Albanian words, we can find easily the
proof of phonetic traces. We will quote the continuous rotation
of borrowing from ancient Greek
(mokër,
from
mãkhcmá)
ancient Latin,
(ferner,
from
ßmina)
and ancient Slavic
(tërë-
sirë,
from
tracina)
the process which lived in the speech of the
south through the 10th century of our era. Also the consonant
s
had been transformed into sh up to the

century. There are
proofs of ancient denominations showing:
Shkodër,
from
Scodra; Shkupi, from
Scupi;
Drisht, from Drivastum; Sharri,
from Skardus) etc.
The Albanian language, as stresses Gjovalin Shkurtaj: up
to of the early 15th century, was one of the

unwritten (if
not proved in written documents)... . The first book in Alba¬
nian is Meshari (Miss) by Gjon Buzuku, published the year

gives proof in terms of morphology, phonetics and
syntax, at that time was by that time developed language.
The invasion of the Slavs to the Balkan s

stopped the process of full Romanization of many IUyrians,
while the penetration of Ottomans

the process of Serbization of Albanians, started into 14th
century. Against Albanian mother tongue, during the centuries
at the first hand was the Latin
