I he monograph penned by Dr. Yelena
N.
Shveikovskaya is devoted
JL to the peasantry of the Russian North in the late 16th and early
18th centuries, whose life activities invariably took place in their family circle
and within their village
mir
or commune. The author understands the
mir
as a group association of peasants that combined autonomy and existence
in a definite territorial space. The peasant, and not only in the North,
hereditarily belonged to a household and was a member of
a zemstvo
mir
and
other, smaller, social groups. The author analyzes how the peasants realized
in the course of their daily life their individual life experiences, and tries to
understand how typical the strategy of the decisions taken by them was in
the then existing circumstances. Also, she endeavors to reveal the network
of internal (family and village) relations established by the peasants, as well
as the network of their external relations outside of their own microcosm.
To a great extent, the author conducts her research in accordance with the
current trend of combining historical-and-anthropological methods with
those of micro-sociological analysis and social history techniques. The
monograph is based on a wide range of predominantly archival sources
mostly dating from, but not limited to, the 17th century.
The research is thoroughly based on the specific-to-general approach.
When applied in the monograph, this method has provided descriptive
characteristics of the following entities: the household with the family
of its inhabitants and the village as the locus of habitation and economic
activities of the peasants; the
zemstvo
mir
as an organizational entity and
the nodal point of various neighbor relations; the voyevoda household and its
Otherness with regard to the peasant
mir;
special attention is paid to the
mental and cultural categories of time (routine and festive) and space. In the
ten chapters of her book, Dr. Yelena
N.
Shveikovskaya was the first to shed
light on the issue of the meaning of the term family and its proliferation in
society and in the peasant s daily life practice of the 17th century. Similarly,
she was the first to assess the consequences of the Petrine mobilizations of
1710-17
in regard to the destinies of some individual peasant families, and
to concurrently reveal the negative role played by the mirs who were eager
to get rid of their economically weak members. Also, the author has found
that generations of peasants, being led by the principle of indivisibility of
family property, kept their land possessions undivided as it behooved them

hierarchical structure of the voyevoda household represented by relatives
and servants, that looked completely alien to the peasants. On the whole,

of various manifestations of the routine, specific features and deviations
in the private life of the North Russian peasants and promotes a deeper
understanding of the social nature of the Russian village in the late Middle
Ages and early modern times.
