he presented study managed to identify
858
persons belonging to
39
fami¬
lies, including:
310
from the
Poraj
family,
212 —
from the Pomian family,
158—
from the
Kopacz fam
ily,
96—
from the
Pobóg
family, and
82—
from
I the
Gryf
family. These are certainly not all representatives of the listed
families in the region of
Sieradz
during the fifteenth century, even if only due to
the non-preservation of sources relating to the counties of
Piotrków
and Radmosko.
Within the discussed population it has been possible to indentify
563
men and
295
wo¬
men
(65,6%
and
34,4%
resp.
of the total number of persons). The majority of the fa¬
milies comprising the clan were closely affiliated. The joint ancestor of the
Bużeń-
skis, the Niechmirowskis, the
Pstrokońskis,
the Witowskis and the Lipnickis
of the
Poraj
coat of arms was Ninogniew, the thirteenth-century
voivode
of
Sieradz.
The
Poraj
families from the counties of
Radomsko
and
Piotrków
—
the
Dąbrowskis
(from
Dąbrowa Zielona),
the Garnysz, the Garnkowskis, the Gidzielskis, the
Kodręb-
skis, and the Kuczowskis
—
descended from Spytygniew, the
voivode
of
Łęczyca
in the middle of the thirteenth century. Another related group among the Porajs was
composed of the
Kościerskis,
the
Jeżowskis,
the Grocholskis, the Wierzchowskis,
the
Małyńskis
and the Podleskis. The maintenance of family ties was frequently at¬
tained by neighbour communities, the outcome of a fragmentation of larger proper¬
ties, discernible among small groups (such as
Kopacz
and
Gryf)·
The society of the gentry was connected by a network of clan, family, neigh¬
bourly and territory (land) ties. Genealogical studies make it possible to partly re¬
create such relations. The cited examples of acting as witnesses in cases concerning
the questioning of the gentry status or the vendetta portray the circle of family mem¬
bers. The Sieradz-based Pomian,
Gryf, Kopacz
and
Poraj
families did not include
outstanding figures with political ambitions. The social elites based their status on
three factors: property, access to power and prestige. In the case of the discussed
families we may speak, at best, about county elites. Almost half of the families were
appointed to land offices. If, however, we refer the number of

officials to a popu¬
lation of
509
laymen, then the result is by no means impressive
(5%).
The offices
of
voivode
and castellan of
Sieradz,
the highest in the hierarchy, were already at
the time beyond their reach. On the other hand, the local families had taken over
the lower ranking castellanies
(Spycimierz, Konary, Sieradz)
and offices connected

with the court system. Lower ranking offices (sword-bearer, cup-bearer, subdapi-
fer,
stolnik, wojski,
standard-bearer) remained mainly in the hands of members
of the Pomian and
Poraj
families, the two most numerous families in the region
of
Sieradz.
Every
élite
tends to petrify a favourable configuration of forces.
The voivodeship of
Sieradz
also witnessed a stabilisation of the personal composi¬
tion of the land and county elites. Offices were assumed by families long connected
with the region of their activity, which rarely admitted persons from outside their
circle. More than ten among the distinguished families retained the status of offi¬
cials to the end of the First Commonwealth.
The presented families remained considerably differentiated as regards their
property
—
from owners of seven villages to those of several
lanei
without any
peasants. Property was subjected to constant fluctuation. None of the mentioned
families owned a model complex composed of a town surrounded by villages, a pa¬
rish and a lord s residence (a castle, fortalicium). Only the
Bużeńskis,
who meet
the first three conditions, came close but nothing is known about a castle residence
in Burzenin. Property concentrated within the county and even more often within
the parish predominated. The preservation of the financial status for a whole century
proved to be a difficult task for all groups. High demographic dynamics and the prin¬
ciple of equal division destroyed many a fortune.
The possibility of preventing pauperisation was rather slight. Apart from divi¬
sions, which halted this process for a certain time, only a few enjoyed access to
power together with an opportunity for profitable lease rents or a chance to benefit
from Church revenues (e.g. the
Grądzkis).
Financial differentiation is evidenced by the dowries of daughters, oscillating
from

to

grzy wnas. The average dowry totalled about
65
grzywnas. The fluc¬
tuation of the dowries across several generations discloses the rise or decline
of the economic and thus the social status of a given family, the effect of marriages
with spouses from lower classes.
Difficulties with recreating the original financial status were intensified by the
agricultural crisis of the fifteenth century, revealed in the drop of the prices of com¬
modities produced by the gentry landed estates and, as a consequence, the absence
of ready cash among the owners. Rent was used extensively as a form of winning
investment and consumption credit. A deterioration of the economic conditions af¬
fected predominantly the medium gentry, i.e. the group of the discussed families.
The sources disclose the enterprising spirit of the
Sieradz
gentry and efforts aimed
at protecting the heretofore position (the establishment of landed estates, animal
husbandry, mills, taverns). Organisational investments
—
such as the foundation
of parish churches
—
were, as a rule, made in the fourteenth century. The Porajs
mentioned in this study were the owners of seven churches in
Dąbrowa Zielona,
Ко-
biele, Gidle,
Kodrąb,
Burzenin,
Małyń,
and
Wierzchy.
The Pomians founded three
parishes: Grabno, Rossoszyca, and
Miłkowice.
Representatives of the
Gryf
family
had two churches:
Charłupia Mała (Świebodzice)
and Kwiatkowice (the Jaksowie).
The
Kopacz
family also enjoyed the right of patronage over two churches: in
Góra

(the
Włyńskis)
and Kamionacz, as well as co-ownership in Zadzim (the
Włyńskis).
The church in
Strońsk,
founded by the
Pobóg
family, originated from the thirteenth
century, as testified by cases connected with the execution of the right of patronage
by the
Strońskis
and the Zapolskis in the fifteenth century. Tithes reveal former
family relations with the founders. The Kobierzyckis from Kobierzycko in the pa¬
rish of
Wróblew
and the Chebdas from
Gzików
in the parish of
Błaszki
gave their
tithe to Rossoszyca; the
Włyńskis
—
the owners of Kobylniki in the parish of
Góra
and
Małków
in the parish of
Warta
—
to the family foundation in Kamionacz. Other
foundations
—
chapels, altars
—
were established by clergymen (the
Bużeńskis,
the
Grądzkis,
the
Kościerskis).
Access to power was of great importance for the financial and social promo¬
tion of the less wealthy gentry. In the
Sieradz
region the gentry
élite
of power
could assume form within the entourage of the highest officials
—
the
starosta
and the
voivode.
The royal court was much too distant and, for all practical purpo¬
ses, inaccessible for the local gentry, even the prosperous noblemen. A characteristic
phenomenon can be observed in the case of the
Sieradz—
based Porajs. The assump¬
tion of the office of the
starosta
of
Sieradz
by
Mikołaj Białucha
from
Michałów
(1406-1418)
resulted in the appearance at his side of numerous representatives
of this family from the
Sieradz
region (the Rossoskis, the Grocholskis, the
Jeżowskis
and the
Kościerskis),
who took over almost all offices in the town courts (judge,
subiudex,
burgrave)
which provided revenues, at times quite considerable. A similar
phenomenon occurred the moment the office of the
starosta
was taken over by yet
another
Poraj — Mikołaj Kurozwęcki.
A large part was played by education. On the average, every ninth man in this
group of the gentry was expected to join the Church. A total of

clergymen in¬
cluded
17
prelates and canons and twenty parish priests.
The gentry sought opportunities for social and financial advancement in
Rus .
Among the discussed families, members of the
Garnysz (Poraj)
and
Świebodzice
(Gryf)
families migrated. Vast landed estates in
Rus
attracted, for example, the Ko-
niecpolskis from the Sieradz-Little Poland borderland, followed by noblemen from
overpopulated regions.
