SUMMARY
This tribute book marking the centenary of the Croatian Journalists Association is not presented to the public
with the intent of monopolizing the historical truth. Rather, it is a modest contribution to revealing the complex
socio-political problems in which the journalistic profession, in spite of all the material-status issues, political-
ideological stigma and many other objective difficulties, which can only be derived from public activity of this
kind, nevertheless managed to approach the centenary.
This memorial is offered to the public in several segments. In the first part, after the introductory words of
the President of the Association, we attempted to present the Association s work in its (one hopes) first hun¬
dred years. As in the previous memorial, we entitled the text Society of Journalists: between public interest and
governments demands, as we believed that the phrase best summarizes the essence of journalism s being in the
most concise way, within the observed one hundred years period. The title is from our prematurely deceased
colleague, journalist and scholar

Lipovean,
in whose path we tried to follow.
In the second part, attention is focused on the material essence of the Association; to resolving the recurring
issue of the Journalists Home, which has stretched over many decades. The issue was only addressed after the
Association s material conditions had been put in order, which is depicted in the text about its one hundred yea-
r- long battle for material-social status. We also covered the Association s international activities, its Council of
Honor, and presented a sample from the Association s archive

medallions from the history of the Associa¬
tion and the first article about the twentieth anniversary of the Croatian Journalists Union.
In order to get the most authentic picture, we dedicated the third part to profiling several great Croatian
journalists and historical figures who were involved in journalism.
The fourth part presents assemblies, an important organizational form of membership within the Associa¬
tion. In the fifth section, we decided to publish some of the most important historic and contemporary docu¬
ments, as well as a list of the first members of the Croatian Journalists Association, and the list of current mem¬
bers up to the publishing date of this memorial. Also, we included the list of journalism awards winners since
1954
up to the present day.
Ten years have passed since the last memorial, and just a few problems that trouble the profession have
been solved. The legislator, burdened by its attempts to adapt to the given conditions of the global organism,
often forgets that in order to build quality democratic foundations, he has to listen to the pulse of the country
it is building. In order for the pulse to be regular, its steady beat has to be heard because it is the people s voi¬
ce which makes the differentia

that distinguishes a man from a man, nation from nation and despo¬
tism from a democracy. This represents the most important position of the information activities, as was stated
already in
1877
by the visionary first president of the Association, Milan
Grlović:
Print is the ultimate power. Patriotically understanding the needs of the people and the country, it inter¬
prets them upwards and down wards. Its voice, even though it is
m u f
fled, can be heard far a way. Who ever aims
persistently and long enough, finally hits the target!
However, in order for that voice to be heard, for a journalist to be able to perform his duties to the public
with dignity and responsibly, he must be independent.
In order to perform its noble mission to the public, print must be independent, honest and respectable, as
well as unanimous, strong and influential.
The words of the first President, like a warning beacon to the open sea, are unfortunately topical even to¬
day. This is not something we should be proud of because it suggests, in spite of all the time that has passed,
that we have not reached a level of civilization that would place us among the more developed European de¬
mocracies.
Let us leave behind us some guideline for future generations, let us say

perhaps journalistic responsibi¬
lity, independence and integrity, as a guarantee of the reputation of the profession and unity and a strong foot¬
hold in the professional organization will not be only an unfulfilled ideal in the next jubilee book but merely a
simple fact.
