An essential difference, however, emerged over time. Today I do not believe we can blame entirely the criticism because of our deep rooted prejudices, but ourselves. From the criticism of the 40s (G. Calinescu, Tudor Vianu) which calls for the Romanian literary canon in which Slavici was granted a privileged position among the „great writers that is „great creators in the Romanian literature, in the works of the 70s (George Munteanu, Magdalena Popescu) which represent a renewal, a revival of the analytical perspective on the writer s work, until the last three decades, noting the contributions of Anton Cosma, Vasile Popovici, Cornel Ungureanu, Nicolae Manolescu we see a concern and a critical opening not be neglected. In the same spirit of observing the valences, but also the weaknesses of attempting to deepen the analysis of characters and the heroes spiritual depths this paper is written. It wants to be an extension of the researches aiming at „the prospective from deep on the characters. The method of analysis used, belongs equally to narratology and literary anthropology, the latter giving us the reading key which seems the most appropriate human relationship as the geometrical place of Slavici s prose. The proper instrument of this „poll that we believe is able to enhance the creation of the Transylvanian writer, is given to us by the writer himself. With maturity, at the height of his career and life, Slavici wrote in The Human Deed: „The light of consolation has not appeared to me, 267 STELIANA BRÀDESCU unless I asked myself: «Man! What have you got to love above all and how far your love will reach, as to be cheerful, always enthusiastic, always happy to get through life?» This question is the starting point of the entire human wisdom, of practical philosophy, of morality, whether religious or political or social, aesthetic, and above all of pedagogy, for me the highest and the supreme of all sciences1 . On love, nucleus, and also the Gordian knot of any human relationship, Slavici stops surprisingly and seeming to be prophetic, in his entire creation. For the writer there was an evidence already, what later came out as the „thread of Ariadne for the twentieth century thinkers to say that „it is undeniable that love only captures the spirit of becoming. For it seems that it participates like any other human function , without any interference from anybody, to that vital impetus that is the principle of becoming. It alone causes to the superiour spirits, those complex inner developments which enhance all living cells and all tendencies. More man it happens in life, when facing death and when facing love, man appears in his structural authenticity2 . By means of this eternal human feeling which characterizes inter and intra-personal relationships, analyzed rigorously „scientific (the „anamnesis was taken into consideration), this paper aims to answer to some of the accusations that have been brought to the literature of loan Slavici: that moralizing literature, provinciality, lack of modernity ... as well as the difficult questions about the heroes of Slavici, of which we mention a few: „How much do we understand of the emotional reactions and attitudes of a soul, hidden and tense in his silence/lack of communication, than that of Iorgovan?! , „How do we interpret the gesture full of tenderness, 1 Human Deed in loan Slavici, WorL·, vol. 9 (Memories, Varia), Minerva Publishing House, Bucharest, 1978, pp. 605-606. 2 Camil Petxescu, Opinions and Attitudes, Literature Publishing House, Bucharest, 1962, p. 209. 268 Slavici sau iubirea ca mod de viaţă love and at the same time criminal, with which Ghiţă kills his wife, Ana?! , „How much force and how much weakness we discover in Nati personality?! The freshness, strength and fervor ... of this „Old Fashioned/Obsolete master of the Romanian literature are enlightened by a broad beam of x-ray vision on the critical vision of this writer s universe, of the literary analysis of his works- masterpieces, to which separate sub-chapters are devoted to, but also by the creation of three studies that make an overall synthesis of a brief spiritual monography, a fruit of the curiosity emerged from the questions: „How much talent and how much work and skill does Slavici s characters creation demand? Does he predestine his heroes or not? „How will, in the matter of the epic/narative, the two specific skills of the narator be moulded, ever since his debut: the drama instinct and the tragic vocation? What is the narrator s masterpieces tragic charm? , , ,How accurate is the time separation of his entire work the school books offer? , „Is Slavici a thesist writer? . Without intending to do a factual and documentary recreation of the writer s biography, the sub-chapters „Slavici the balanced , „Slavici the tragic and „Slavici the great/valient attempt to provide answers with a purely symptomatic character clarifying for the critic who puts the masterpieces on one side and the waste papers on the other side, but has an overall view for the entire work, considering it a living organism. The subchapter entitled „The Lucky Mill or the mininovel of a simulacrum of love moves the focus of reading and interpretation of the novel from a pecuniary or social issue to a relational, communication one. We consider that the communication deficiencies of Ana-Ghiţă couple are created in an optimal way of deciphering novel heroes personality and provides a critical new understanding of contradictory opinions which have been formulated over time about Slavici s first masterpiece. Pădureanca/The Lass - is an exercise of the phenomenology of the disease, it intends to be a study about the psychology and pathology of the son-parents and 269 STELIANA BRÄDESCU erotic relationships, which the narator s text brings to our discussion. The characters of this short-story, according to data provided to us, can be seen as elements of a naturalistic scheme, so by this sub- chapter we intend to take the first step towards future theme development on Slavici as belonging to a naturalist-realist literature as Nicolae Manolescu used to call Rebreanu s literature. Mara, or „about those in the deep of the earth where all nations meet the most important novel of Slavici, can be noted as a very current one, I think. On the one hand, Mara discusses interethnic couple relationship for both partners for which they both straggle strongly, which gives the writer the framework for a major literary analysis, serious and profound. On the other hand interrelated threads are pursued simultaneously, which are established among all members of this motley world which Slavici describes in the first paragraphs. The identity crisis, the alteration pressure, sexes polemics, the confrontation between the father s law and mother s law, the degeneration, are found in the novel written in 1894, and this sub-chapter which is dedicated to it, using the tools of imagology, aims to illustrate how the writer s skill offers the reader. We also proposed the recovery of texts of which the short-story „The Crows Inn η which the writer gives the reader his first and only great work of fantastic literature. The singularity seems to send the work in the field of „literary experiments . Things are not at all like this. Although Slavici does not chose to keep the formula on the fantastic any more, surprisingly, „The Crows Inn demonstrates the existence of will and technique to create this one. The over-flow of precision, throughness of catching strange happenings, makes maximum use of Slavici s resources and talent of a realist writer. The writer s creation has no doubt its flaws, its ups and downs, like his entire long and tumultuous existence The spirit and letter of his literary texts are undoubtedly modified, radically since the young unsure, unpredictable, expansive, but uneasy/ 270 Slavici sau iubirea ca mod de viaţă uncomfortable Slavici, like in Soll and Haben; to that in that glory mature, strong, balanced, tolerant man of understanding, of love for his neighbour as we discover him in The Human Deed and, finally, to the proud old Slavici, upsetting by etics, ostensibly even when he reminds his „prisons . Taking all these into consideration, the paper also tried to provide a new chronology of the Transylvanian writer. What we really wanted in fact, was, however, that it meets a goal formulated by Eleonora Slavici, full of modesty and pain, during heavy years of denigration and collective forgetfulness: „our nation s emotionally honest thinkers must offer (Slavici) the place he deserves1 . If I succeed or not remains to be seen. 1 Eleonora Slavici, Diary, Committee for Culture and AH of Timişoara, Municipal Library, 1969, p. 66. 271
