P. Musorgsky's autographs constitute one of the most valuable collections being kept in the Manuscript Scientific Department of the St Petersburg State Conservatory Scientific Music Library. This collec¬ tion includes 23 authentic manuscripts of Musorgsky's music works, an album music autograph, 3 letters and 2 inscriptions made by the composer on the editions of his music. Musorgsky's autographs were coming into the Conservatory at dif¬ ferent times. Still during the composer's lifetime, some manuscripts of his works planned for being performed at the concerts of the Russian Music Society (RMS) came into the Society's library (it should be re¬ membered that the Conservatory was under the authority of RMS at that time). Among these works, there is Scherzo in В flat major (performed in 1860 under Anton Rubinstein), as well as vocal-score and full-score autographs of the chorus from incidental music to the tragedy Oedipus (second version). The chorus was intended to be performed at one of the RMS concerts, but the performance did not take place because of the composer's disagreement with the Society Directorial Board; nev¬ ertheless, the manuscripts remained at the library. The main part of Musorgsky's music autographs — 19 depository units — were bought by the Conservatory from S. M. Liapunov in 1919. It is known that originally these autographs were in the possession of M. A. Balakirev, being inherited after his decease by Liapunov ac¬ cording to Balakirev's will. Among them, there are manuscripts of Musorgsky's St. John's Night on the Bare Mountain, Dream Vision of the Parubok (destined for the opera Sorochintsy Fair), fragments of the unfinished opera Salammbô, vocal compositions. In 1927, some materials related to Musorgsky were transferred to the Conservatory from the Historical Museum of the former Cadet School of the Guards. Formerly, the autographs of the renowned pupil of the School had come into the Museum from Cesar Cui. Among these mate¬ rials, there is an autograph of Musorgsky's song Darling Savishna. One of Musorgsky's music autographs may be found in the col¬ lection album that belonged to G. A. Demidov, one of the composer's 146 friends serving together with him in the Preobrazhensky Regiment. On November 4, 1863, Musorgsky wrote down into the album a fragment of his Saul's Song Before the Battle for voice and piano. In the recent years, only one of Musorgsky's autographs came into the Manuscript Department. In 1991, A. S. Belonenko, the Conservato¬ ry Vice-Rector for Research Affairs, passed a printed copy of Musorg¬ sky's song Billy-Goat (A High Society Fairy-Tale) with the composer's inscription. Formed of acquirements from different times and different sources, the collection of Musorgsky's documents at the St Petersburg Conser¬ vatory embraces almost all the periods of the composer's life. The let¬ ters being kept in the Conservatory Library are dated from three differ¬ ent decades (from 1860s to 1880). Autographs of compositions belong mainly to the early period of Musorgsky's creative work and represent various genres: fragments of operas, symphonic, vocal and piano works, piano arrangements of works by other composers. The earliest compo¬ sition, dated 1858, is the orchestral version of Musorgsky's song Where Art Thou, Little Star? In a number of manuscripts, the composer's name is written in its original form, without letter 'g' ('Mussorsky'). The autographs represent various forms of the composer's handwrit¬ ing — from unsteady and hesitating in the compositions dated from the end of the 1850s to notable for its particular calligraphic expression in the works of later years. Some manuscripts of Musorgsky's compositions belong to the pe¬ riod of his acquaintance and close contacts with his teacher M. A. Bala¬ kirev. Among these manuscripts, there are piano arrangements of works by Glinka and Beethoven and the composer's 'first experience in instru¬ mentation', i. e. the full score of his song Where Art Thou, Little Star? Under Balakirev's guidance, the young composer worked at his music to the tragedy Oedipus (of which only the Scene in the Temple has been preserved). These manuscripts contain some remarks and correc¬ tions written in pencil, probably by Balakirev. The remarks reflect some technical moments in Balakirev's studies with his pupil: corrections of orchestration and of some details in notation and phrasing, examples of clarifying the disposition of tones in chords, etc. 147 In the autographs of Musorgsky's early compositions we may see the peculiarities of his manner of writing music text and taking shape of the manuscript; these peculiarities will be characteristic also for his later works. In fact, all the autographs are fair copies, notable, despite some corrections, for their accuracy and particular calligraphy in music handwriting. As a rule, at the end of the work Musorgsky makes de¬ tailed remarks indicating the time and place of composing, and some¬ times the exact moment of finishing the work. Notwithstanding the ac¬ curacy of writing and carefulness in shaping the manuscripts displayed by the composer, they are evidently different in their appearance. For example, the autographs of the songs having been prepared to print contain almost no corrections. On the contrary, the autograph oí Dream Vision of the Parubok demonstrates the composer's active creative work: it has numerous corrections in music and literary text, erasures and cancellings connected with remaking the fragment taken from the collective opera-ballet Mlada. Frequent but very accurate modifications of the text may be found also in the score of St. John's Night. The fair- copy character of writing, calligraphic shape of the score do not reflect at all the composer's feelings expressed in his letter to V. V. Nikolsky: "With regard to St. John's Night, I must say that I have written it very quickly, directly in full score. <.> something seethed in me in full swing, and, really, I was not aware of the things happening with me." One of the characteristic features of Musorgsky's manuscripts is mak¬ ing the indications of tempo and remarks for performance in Russian, including technical terms of performance (for instance, i. e. 'with the end of the bow', instead of apunta d'arco), as well as the nomenclature of instruments themselves, and so on. In our opinion, Musorgsky worked out his manner of shaping the manuscripts under the influence of Balakirev. Balakirev's autographs are notable for the same accuracy of writing the music text, similar manner of corrections, exactness in designating the dates, up to indicat¬ ing the minutes of finishing the work, as well as marking some events of the composer's life connected with that day. At present, quite a number of Musorgsky's works remain unpub¬ lished. Nine of such manuscripts are now being kept in the St Petersburg 148 Conservatory. They include Musorgsky's arrangements of works by Glinka and Beethoven, orchestral version of his song Where Art Thou, Little Star? (the composer's first orchestral score), full-score fragments of his unfinished opera Salammbô (Battle Song of Libyans and the first scene of Act 4), full scores of the second and the third versions of the Scene in the Temple from the tragedy Oedipus. In December 2006, the full-score fragments of the composer's unpublished works were per¬ formed at the Alexander Glazunov Concert Hall of the Conservatory under A. V. Sladkovský, as part of the concert cycle The Manuscript Department of the St Petersburg Conservatory Represents. The concert program was planned to be performed under Mstislav Rostropovich on May 7, 2006, but the performance was postponed for December 19 of the same year, and, because of his illness, Rostropovich was already unable to come to St. Petersburg. This project became a part of history, and, as remembrance of it, there exist a printed poster and a prospectus of the concert with the name of the outstanding musician. Musorgsky's epistolary heritage is represented by three letters from the Manuscript Department collection. The letters are addressed to A. P. Zakharyina, M. R. Cui, and N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov. Musorgsky's music autographs and letters from the Manuscript De¬ partment are also supplemented with other materials: the composer's portraits, photos of musicians — performers of his works. Information on Musorgsky may be found in correspondence docu¬ ments written by different persons. The letters by V. V. Stassov, M. A. Balakirev contain discussions concerning some situations of the composer's life, as well as requests for rendering assistance to the au¬ thor of Boris Godunov. Various documents related to Musorgsky are in the archives of O. O. Paleček and of the Trustee Council for supporting Russian composers and musicians. The materials devoted to Musorg¬ sky are supplemented by treatments, arrangements and instrumenta¬ tions of his works, made by N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, A. K. Liadov, D. D. Shostakovich. All these materials, forming a kind of'documenta¬ ry dialogue', enrich the information already known from other sources and represent some unknown facts of the composer's creative biogra¬ phy. 149
