In both waves, the proportion of people with university education and scholars (that is university teachers and researchers acting in sciences and humanities) was approximately about 1.5% that is higher than the average in Czechoslovakia. In spite of the fact that the cultural and scientific emigration represent in the Czech contemporary history a consequential phenomenon, our knowledge about it has been only fragmentary. In 2008 the project Czech Scholars in Exile 1948-1989 received a grant of the Grant Agency of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (CSAS) . Its programme was designed by the Centre for the History of Sciences and Humanities of the Institute of Contemporary History of the CSAS along with other institutes of the CSAS: the Masaryk Institute and Archives, the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Microbiology. The main goal of the project has been research into the reasons, process and consequences of the Czech scientific exile in the period of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia focusing on the target group of scholars from different fields affiliated to the CSAS. One of the planned outcomes of the project is this dictionary with one hundred scientific biographies of top-notch Czech exile scholars coming from the CSAS. Its aim is not only in presenting and summarising new information and unique biographic material but also in its expected future utilisation for analytical, comparative and prosopographical research. The sample of researchers whose biographies are available in the book may be considered sufficiently representative for such purposes as about half of the scholars who left Czechoslovakia for exile during the communist regime came from the CSAS institutes. The book is introduced by a comprehensive essay by Antonín Kostián entitled The Path of Scholars to Exile (Escapes to Emigration and the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences). The paper pursues in principle the following aims: - Provide the reader with scholarly information about the historical background of the destinies of the respective scholars; it focuses in this sense on problems connected with the overall emigration from the communist Czechoslovakia, on the institutional embedment of research in the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences and the mingling of various factors, political as well as professional, in the scientific life, both in Czechoslovakia and in exile; 585 Ont II u iule rd Czech Scholars in Ι· χ і 1 e - Make use of the advantage that assembling biographical data of a defined group of scholars has resulted in creation of a remarkably complex information body that can be subjected to historical analysis; in this sense the paper attempts to construct a collective biography of these scholars. The essay comprises seven chapters: Chapter 1 {Introduction) deals with demarcation of notions that used to label the escapes from the communist Czechoslovakia (especially „emigration , „exile ), and the main methodological streams nurtured in the contemporary research to resolve these questions. Chapter 2 (Escapes from the Communist Czechoslovakia) summarizes the overall extent of emigration (in the years 1948-1968 about 60 thousand people; in the years 1968-1989 about 200 thousand people) and presents a retrospection of the repressive measures taken by the communist state to prevent flights from the country (institution of „unlawful abandonment of the Republic as a criminal offense; vigilant guarding and building of charged high-wire entanglements at the borders and others). As far as it is known, in the years 1968-1989 during illegal attempts to pass the Czechoslovak border were killed 280 to 370 people. Chapter 3 (CSAS and the Scientific Emigration 1952-1970) recalls first of all the establishment of the CSAS in 1952 where Soviet patterns were put across and the Soviet favorite the historian Z. Nejedlý became its first President. The new institution was strongly supported by the communist regime so that it soon comprised 60-80 institutes and employed a great number of workers (in 1960 about 6 thousand, in 1970 about 10 thousand). However, its weak position in the communist system of power became obvious especially after Nejedlý s death when his successor became the chemist F. Šorm. In the 1950s, Czechoslovak science was isolated from the worldwide development and its international contacts were limited to minimum; international repute was just simulated, inter alia with the help of a small group of American scientists who resided in Prague and propagandistically supported the communist regime (the biochemist J. H. Cort, the economist G. S. Wheeler and others). The isolation was gradually surpassed since the second half of the 1950s when the researchers from the CSAS started to travel more often to the countries of the free world to attend international meetings, participate in study trips and reside at foreign workplaces. The first émigrés left CSAS in 1957; in average 25 persons/year were already leaving in the years 1964-1967. The CSAS was taking part in the liberalisation movement of the 1960s especially through participating in the economic reform project managed by O. Šik, then the Director of the Economics Institute of the CSAS. hi reform projects running within the CSAS also several other teams were involved, like the one led by Z. Mlynár preparing a reform of the political system, or the group of R. Richta dealing with the influence of scientific and technical development on the society. In the course of the Prague Spring 1968, a number of CSAS workers became enthusiastically engaged in newly emerging civic activities (for instance in KAN - Club of Active Non- Partisans); top-notch scientists from the CSAS signed the manifesto Two Thousand Words which was later declared for 586 Summary one of the reasons of the Soviet military intervention. These all were phenomena that later induced the strong upsurge of emigration from the CSAS. Chapter 4 {The High Emigration Wave 1968-1970 and its Place in the History of Scientific Exile) presents some data on the overall size and structure of emigration from CSAS in the period of the communist regime. On the grounds of a database which encompasses more than 720 emigres from the CSAS, it is possible to estimate that the total number of émigrés was between 760 and 790; this number corresponded to about 6-7 % of workers in this institution from which the absolute majority left between August 21,1968 and 1970. The emigres came from a wide range of different scientific fields, but the amount of chemists among them was higher than average. The prosopographic analysis of the set of one hundred persons whose scientific biographies are collected in this book demonstrated that the core of this group was formed by scholars born between 1918 and 1941 who mostly left for exile at the age of 26-40 (a strong set also represents the age group 40-50). Most of them left for the USA, the rest of them for Canada, West Germany and other European countries. Many were dedicated to the communist regime, and some of them were even Communist Party members; their loyalty was strongly undermined, however, by the invasion of the Warsaw Pact armies in August 1968. This event evoked en masse a feeling of acute existential threat whose intensity was amplified by memories of the Second World War (many of these scholars had been former prisoners of concentration camps or had went through other ordeal) or persecution in the 1950s (three of them used to be political prisoners, several others had experienced other maltreatment); political engagement during Prague Spring also stirred up anxieties. Important role in decision making about the departure for exile also played the expectation of better perspectives in career building. Chapter 5 {Scientific Exile and the CSAS During the „Normalization Period) deals in the first place with the changes that the hardening of the communist power brought about in scientific life in the years 1970-1989 (dismissals from jobs, dissolution of institutes, ideological supervision of research, restriction of international contacts). The chapter then treats the continuing emigration with all its pronounced limitations caused by the worsening of political situation. The affair of the mathematician K. Čulík who was allowed to leave Czechoslovakia only in 1976 thanks to the international public pressure headed by N. Chomsky is discussed in detail. Chapter 6 {Overlapping of Scientific and Political Exile) focuses on those former workers of the CSAS who during their exile participated markedly in political activities; it concentrates on some personalities like the economist O. Šik (member of the government during the Prague Spring), the politologist Z. Mlynář (Secretary of the Communist Party Central Committee during the Prague Spring), the physicist F. Janouch (founder of the Charter 77 Foundation) and his father-in-law the Marxist philosopher A. Kolman. Chapter 7 {Epilogue after November: (No-)Returns of Exile Scholars) deals with the situation after the fall of the communist regime. It shows that most of the exile scholars have resumed their contacts with the Czech scholars and scientific institutions 587 One Huiiderd Czech Scholars in Hxilc and assisted them meaningfully on theirs path from isolation. However, the emigre scientists have chosen complete re-emigration only in a few cases. The essay is followed by one hundred biographies of scholars (in alphabetic order) who used to be workers of the CSAS and emigrated between 1960 and 1989.505 The personalities were selected in a painstaking process from a database of about 720 names while the only criterion of enlistment in the book was scientific excellence and international significance and reputation, prior to or after departure for exile. About half of the biographies belong to scholars from life and chemical sciences, one third to those from inanimate sciences and the rest represent humanities. Such division also reflects which fields were mostly afflicted by emigration. The editorial team attempted to outline a unified structure of the biographies with bibliographic documentation (each biography is followed by a short list of most important works and biobibliographic references) to achieve a scholarly account of the life and scientific contribution and international appraisal of each personality. On the other hand, the biographies also reflect the uniqueness of human destinies, often dramatic in extreme conditions brought about by the exile itself. The editors were lucky enough to find for such demanding elaboration an outstanding team of authors who in their majority are also leading scholars in their fields, often friends or collaborators of the depicted personalities. Such choice of competent biographers enabled to use expert terminology describing the scholarly work of the individual scientist and at the same time convey details of mostly fascinating life journeys. Most of the scholars whose biographic entries are in the book are still alive which allowed the authors to work hand in hand with them. This gives many biographies a mark of authenticity. There overlaps the general and the specific, the politics and ideology with the intimate and personal, the individual with the collective scientific endeavour, in the individual fates. They testify on the family and political background of exile scientists, motivations of their decisions, sometimes dramatic routes of escape, incorporation in the new scientific communities, scientific achievements before and after escape, international honors and appreciation. The book also contains a rare collection of pictures, most of them published for the first time: portraits of the scholars, photographs that catch their working and family environment and their interests and hobbies, documents that complement the background information. Other supplements of the book are list of authors, list of abbreviations and scientific fields and index of names. Being a unique resource for contemporary history as well as recent history of science this volume offers a special insight into the practices of the communist regime. The reader, whether a professional or a lay one, will find not only fascinating narrative but also rich background material to some of the less known sides of this complex historical period. 505 The scholars and their professions translated in English are enlisted in the Contents. 588
