Recent statistics show that gastrointes¬ tinal complaints account for nearly a third or all visits to primary care doctors and that nearly one in two Americans suffer from digestive disease. Millions more suffer from conditions such as migraine headaches, ar¬ thritis, mood disorders, chronic fatigue, asthma, allergies, and menstrual dysfunction, which are related to a distor¬ tion in digestive health. Despite the evidence in support of integrative approaches to treatment and prevention of digestive symp¬ toms, these approaches are largely overlooked in treating gastrointestinal disorders. In discussing unconventional treatments, the authors address manv of the controversies that surround the remedies. GERARD E. M ULL IN is Associate Professor of Medicine, Director of Integrative Gì Nutrition Services, and Director of Capsule Endoscopy for the Gastroenterology Division at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, which has been ranked by US News and World Report as the best hospital in the United States for the last 20 years in a row. Dr. Mullin is an internist, gastroenterologist, and nutritionist, and the only physician in the United States who is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine for Gastroenterology, the American Society of Enterai and Parenteral Nutrition, the American College of Nutrition, and the American Board of Nutrition Physician Specialists. Dr. Mullin also teaches the GI modules at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine s Fellowship in Integrative Medicine, a program created by Andrew Weil, MD. An international authority in integrative medicine, nutrition, and gastroenterology, Dr. Mullin is well-published in the field of gastrointestinal health and integrative nutrition, and serves on the editorial board for ten medical journals. He also co-edited the Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease Nutrition Desk Reference (2011). In addition, he has appeared on radio and television programs and contributed to stories ід The New York Times, Associated Press, ABC News, Good Morning America, Newsday, Martha Stewart Living, Prevention, Men s Health, and Good Housekeeping. Dr. Mullin graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School, completed his training in internal medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, and conducted his fellowship in gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutritioj at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
