of the Second Polish Republic,
1918-1939
Abstract
The subject of the book is a place and role of Southern
Podlasie (Podlachia
or
Podlesia
-
a historical region in eastern Poland) in the defence system of
interwar Poland. The chronological range of the study spans the period from
1918,
when German forces were ousted from the area, to the end of defence
war in the northern part of
Lubelszczyzna
(the Land of Lublin)
:
the Battle
of Kock-Wola Guiowska
(2-6

1939).
The author presents the functioning of the defence system of the Second
Polish Republic against the background of the state of Polish economy, indu¬
stry, and agriculture, including road and railway infrastructure, as well as the
issues related to Polish demography and education. All these elements were
involved in the condition of state defence. Yet, the fundamental subject of the
study is the presentation of military organisation of the western part of the
Corps District Command Number IX
Brześć nad Bugiem
(Brest on the Bug)
on the territory of Southern
Podlasie.
The book describes also the deploy¬
ment of the military units, military operations during the Polish-Soviet War
of
1919-1920,
functioning on a peace footing and war preparations made in
this territory. The last part of the book is devoted to the September Campaign
of
1939
in the Southern
Podlasie.
