Abstract
The present book analyses the problem of integration and disintegration of the
Polish state at the times of the Piasts Dynasty on the basis of two chronicles
—
written
by
Marcin
Kromer and
Marcin
and Joachim
Bielski.
It discusses the subject of all the
threats against Poland in the first period of its existence. On the basis of these two
chronicles the author indicates factors that both integrated and disintegrated life in the
time of the Piasts. Polish rulers, starting from Mieszko I, tried to strengthen and deve¬
lop the Polish state, but their attempts did not prevent internal and external threats
which many times put the existence of the Polish state into question. Some internal
problems are worth special attention, including the collapse of the first Piasts monar¬
chy and the progressively increasing political fragmentation. External threats took the
form of invasions from neighbouring countries.
After a long period of fragmentation the process of restoration of the Polish state
began. First,
Přemysl
II attempted to restore the monarchy, with the process being
continued by
Władysław
I the Short. The full restoration was achieved by the last
Piast
— Casimir
III the Great.
The research presents the image of the history of the Polish state against the back¬
drop of discourse of Renaissance historiography of
Marcin
Kromer and
Marcin
and
Joachim
Bielski.

Thus
the book is a comparative analysis of the two chronicles, and presents similarities and
differences between the narratives of the two chroniclers. The analysis is exemplified
by numerous quotations.
The vision of Polish history presented by the chroniclers from the first historical
Polish ruler, Prince Mieszko I, to the last king of the
Piast
Dynasty, corresponds with
the contemporary historical knowledge of the chroniclers. Their accounts are replete
with patriotism and a desire to present Polish history to the glory of Poland. There are,
however, many embellishments and fictional stories, as well as faith in God s Providence.

The chroniclers defend Poland, both when it was united, and when its statehood was
being seriously threatened or even when it was fragmented. This is evident both in the
descriptions of Mieszko Is attempts to be crowned king of Poland and in the chronic¬
lers opinions about the centuries-old-affiliation of the lands of Crakow and Silesia
to Poland.
Both Kromer and the Bielskis tried to mirror in their writings the history of Poland
seen through the prism of the glorious rule of the
Piast
Dynasty.
One of the most important problems present in the chronicles was the disintegra¬
tion of the Polish state. First of all, the book depicts the questions concerning external
threats to the young state: the crisis of the first Piasts monarchy, the rule by Palatine
Sieciech, and the period of political fragmentation.
Equally important in the eyes of the chroniclers was the impact on the increasing
fragmentation of foreign invasions. Both Kromer and the Bielskis describe continuous
conflicts with the emperor, giving detailed accounts of almost every single raid on Polish
lands. They indicate that throughout the whole period of building its statehood, Poland s
independence was threatened by its neighbours, especially from the west. It was not,
however, the only external menace. In similar ways the chroniclers describe, probably
on the basis of a monumental history of Poland by
Jan Długosz,
the invasion of the
Tartars who further oppressed the fragmented country. They emphasise that the death
of Henry II the Pious and the fight against the Tartars exacerbated the difficult internal
situation of Poland, bringing about its further fragmentation. They also call attention
to the problem of claims to the Krakow crown made by the Czech Premyslid and
Luxembourg Dynasties. The last of the menaces was the problem of the German kni¬
ghts of the Teutonic Order. The chroniclers describe in a similar way

III the Greats negotiations with, the tenacious
Teutonic Knights.
When describing Poland s internal and external problems, Kromer and the Bielskis
perceived their interactions and the destructive impact they had on the state which was
gradually falling into chaos.
Władysław
I the Short and
Casimir
III the Great who reunited the Polish lands and
integrated the state were described by the chroniclers as powerful monarchs skilfully
overcoming all internal and external difficulties. What is significant is that all the Piasts
are held in high regard by both authors, for whom the whole
Piast
Dynasty is of vital
importance for the history of Poland, and all its members were distinguished by conscien¬
tious rule. They emphasise that despite several negative rulers unable to reign, the dyna¬
sty was dominated by monarchs who were just, talented and worthy of the title, King.
Undoubtedly, the presentation by Kromer and the Bielskis of the integration and
disintegration of the Polish state was an arduous and difficult task. They had to refer
to various sources, mainly Polish, but not only. It is worth noting that the chroniclers
intentionally presented Polish history in such a way as to emphasise the glory of Polish
rulers and to compile a history that would be the pride of future generations.
The text by
Marcin Bielski,
significantly corrected and edited by his son, Joachim,
bears many similarities to Kromer s chronicle. This book highlights the unusual simi-
