Summary
The subject of the book was to characterise transformations of Polish
culture during the political breakthrough of
1956,
which is briefly called
the Polish October and means the political thaw started in October
1956
following the end of the Stalinist era. The main subject of the description
are the ways in which freedom was understood at that time, and which
were shown in various forms of artistic and civic activities of writers: in
journalism, public appearances and in the works of literature. The point of
reference is freedom as defined by Hannah
Arendt,
i.e. as a political cate¬
gory which is fulfilled exclusively in mutual activities of many people.
In Part One of this work dissertations present in general the subject of
freedom in Polish culture of October
1956
and concern the literary life as
well as analyse publications in the press, declarations and artistic pro¬
grammes.
This part begins with the characterisation of the political thaw, of the
transition period between social realism and the October breakthrough
marked by conservatism and the state of chaos as the postulates formu¬
lated then are concerned. They were of a political character (change of the
way in which culture was to be managed), moral (objection to conformist
attitudes) and artistic (modification of social realism). These changes were
not of a radical kind, they did not shake the general principles of cultural
policies.
The next chapters present the ways of existence in the literary publica¬
tions of views concerning the state s sovereignty and its economic system.
Changes which occurred in this field in
1956
were the result of a compro¬
mise between demands calling for the completion of the revolution and
establishing of full independence and the attitudes referring to the idea of
the
raison d état,
wanting the restriction of expectations, the demand which

was due to geopolitical reasons. On the other hand, the tool to gain free¬
dom on the economic level was the idea of workers self-government as a
new form of management of companies.
The point of departure of the chapter titled
W stronę rezerwatu
[Towards
the reservation] is a well-known hypothesis of
Janusz Sławiński
which tells
about the character of the literary life in Poland to be more reservation-like
after
1956,
and based on isolation and freedom but enjoyed under some
conditions. The aim was to present activities of the authorities, which led to
the recovering of the control over the literary life of the country: institu¬
tional restrictions of writers autonomy, imposition of the programme of
socialist literature, fuelling of fears against mass culture.
The next chapters bring closer three main ideas as found in the pro¬
gramme of Polish literature of the time of Polish October. According to the
author the internal oppositions inherent in them also made writers accept
reservation-like rules of culture.
The programme of civic literature which is actively engaged in public
life is represented by
Andrzej
Kijowski s critical works. Its analysis leads to
a conclusion that the civilisational-cultural transformations in the modern
world as well as damage done by the Stalinist culture invalidated the hi¬
therto principles of social activity of writers: social confidence and poetics
of realism. The next chapter describes the discussion on modernity and the
artistic programme of
Artur
Sandauer and Julian
Przyboś
as the most con¬
sistent embodiment of the avantguard idea of the autonomy of art. The
utterances of both these authors are interpreted as activities the aim of
which was to achieve the dominant position in the literary life.
The last chapter of Part One, devoted to the generation of the weekly
magazine
Współczesność
[Modern Times] assumes that freedom among
the young generation was demonstrated through indefiniteness (dislike of
programmes, the myth of youth, and going beyond local problems), the
cult of individuality (artist s autonomy, being apolitical, and to protest
against bourgeois attitudes) as well as an escape into privacy. Using that
which has been established by Charles Taylor, the author of this book indi¬
cates social dangers resulting from these points of view: consumerism,
conformism,
ideological stagnancy, the vanishing of community ties, the
sense of alienation in the world. The conclusion presents the relationship
between the writings of the debutantes with existentialist philosophy.
Part Two consists of dissertations which discuss in detail the problems
tackled in Part One.

The chapter devoted to
Witold Woroszylski
discusses the internal
transformation which this poet experienced during his journey to the USSR
and Hungary in the autumn of
1956
as he wished to experience the revolu¬
tionary pathos and enthusiasm.
In the next dissertation the most important prose works of this part of
literature which tries to square up with the past and which is the work of
Jerzy Andrzejewski
and
Kazimierz
Brandys
are discussed. The interpreta¬
tive categories
-
the concepts of evidence and confessions
-
indicate the
object of this squaring up with the past: social reality or one s own attitude
during the Stalinist era, to the justness of the Marxist idea of the rational
history or causes of acceptance of Communism. Remarks on the prose deal¬
ing with the squaring up with the past are supplemented with a discussion
of
Sławomir
Mrozek s short-stories exposing the past with the help of gro¬
tesque and characterisation of Aesopean way of expression as the principle
of social communication after
1956.
The chapter
Żona strachu, matka łez
[ The wife of fear, the mother of
tears ] discusses the October historiosophic reflection using
Bohdan Droz-
dowski s,
Paweł
Hertz s and
Mieczysław
Jastrun s poetry as an example.
The poetic images of fears prove the ideological doubts and match the
universal emotions, the confirmation of which are the journalistic works of
Leszek Kołakowski
and essays on Shakespeare by Jan Kott.
The chapter devoted to
Marek Hłasko
contains a short interpretation of
Pierwszy krok w chmurach
[The first step into the clouds] answering the
question about the causes and aims of violence described in this work. Its
source is the emptiness of existence and the sense of alienation of the world
caused by its instability and opacity.
The chapter
Między erotyką a polityką
[Between eroticism and politics]
presents forms of initiation described in the literary works written during
the Polish October period by female debutantes and in the books contain¬
ing reminiscences which were written years later. In the first case, interpre¬
tation emphasises how the wish to be happy (identified with the possession
of material goods) supersedes the need of freedom. In turn, the memories
of
Henryk
Grynberg,
Jerzy
S.
Stawiński, Marek Hłasko and Agnieszka
Osiecka
show the
1956
breakthrough in its ludic version as a time of play
and entertainment, moral liberalisation by means of which the need for
freedom was satisfied.
The last chapter enumerates components of the mythology of the Oc¬
tober breakthrough, among others, the myth of social unity, the myth of

socialism,
the myth of the new beginning, and the myth of artistic freedom.
In the conclusion the author speaks of the effects of the Polish October
which were of great importance for the culture of the years that followed it:
on artistic richness and spreading of conformist attitudes. The recognition
of this ambiguity of the aftermath of the
1956
breakthrough as the funda¬
mental feature of the Polish People s Republic s culture (after Teresa Wa-
las) allows to frame a hypothesis that the historical and social phenome¬
non, which is called Polish People s Republic was born only after the Polish
October.
