The relationship of the new independent nations Poland and Czechoslovakia caused
many complications and crises during the first years of the post-war era, opposing
the expectations of the general public. The opposing views of both victorious nations
concerning the division of the territories considering the real danger on the part of
the old revisioniscal nations and the new revolutionary regime in Russia the relation
between Poland and Czechoslovakia for years. A potential confederate even became an
embittered enemy. The struggle between both nations was about rather small territories,
in opposite to the massive displacement of the borders in the east and west of Poland
and south of Slovakia. Regarding the question about Teschen both nations didn t want
to give in just like in the pedantic conflict about Jaworina.
The foreign-policy problem was the respective strategic orientation of the both
nations. Poland kept the wish to have a common border with Hungary, which was
treated as possible ally. Because
ofthat
they land claim to parts of the ancient Hungarian
territories of Trentschin, Arwa and Zips. The question about the Hungarian-polish
border was discussed and published several times in Poland above all during the
interim-war period. Czechoslovakia forced the common border with its ally Romania.
Another load for the Polish-Czechoslovakian relation were, in addition to the conflict
about Teschen, the contacts of the Czechoslovakian government to the internment
(de
facto granting of asylum) to the troupes of Semjon Petljura, defeated by Poland
in the east of Slovakia. Czechoslovakia complained about the polish support of the
Slovakian irredentism just the same way.
The clashed strategic interests, the division of Teschen Silesia (which were constantly
denounced by nationalists) and different forms of the political system turned out to
be a insurmountable problem for Poland and Czechoslovakia during the interim-war
period, which was greater than the common threat by Hitler Germany. The idea of an
alliance or just of cooperation between both nations was shot down immediately and
lead both nations inevitable to a disaster during the Second World War.
