The Compilation and Editing Of The Diary
Horace Reginald Stanley s First World War diary spans the whole war and slightly
beyond, commencing in July
1914
before the start of the war and ending in November
1918
plus a postscript written on his return to England after the war. My mother,
Heather Brodie (HB) and I (JB) have transcribed the diary, undertaking very little
editing except where we have felt it appropriate in terms of clarity. We have noted in
the introduction that grandad rewrote half the diary at a later stage but here we present
the original version owing to its immediacy and lack of his censorship. As a Sergeant in
charge of a platoon, this diary gives a particular perspective. Grandad seemed to have a
very special style of writing in the diary. He not only reported on the facts but he gave
his thoughts and expressed his fears and at times it feels almost like a soliloquy. His
writing is compelling and gripping. I personally think it is a remarkable piece of writing
for a man who left school at
12.
The diary is not written in chapters and we feel that it
is better left as such. However, where possible, and particularly for the first part of the
war, I have added (in italics) an indication of timing and events based on the record of
the 1st Battalion The Cambridgeshire Regiment (to which grandad belonged until June
1915)
during
1914-1919
(Riddell
&
Clayton,
1934).
Mr Cliff Brown has also kindly
commented on some of the timing and events in the diary and his observations can be
found in the Appendix.
