Yet as field armour was retired, recycled, and discarded, parade and ceremonial armour took on greater importance and grew increasingly flamboyant. Removed from its utilitarian function of defence but retained for sym¬ bolic uses, armour evolved in a new direction as a medium of artistic expression. Working with this ves¬ tigial cultural form, armourers became artists, free to experiment with elaborate embossed ornament and three-dimensional modelling more appropriate to sculpture. Drawing on theoretical perspectives from anthro¬ pology, literary studies, art history, and gender stud¬ ies, Armour and Masculinity in the Italian Renaissance explores the significance of armour in early mod¬ ern Italy as a cultural artifact and symbolic form. As real warfare diverged more decisively from the sym¬ bolic, armour - encoded with messages regarding the owner s social status - became a chief accessory of elite male identity. Luxury armour was explicitly customized with reference to the owner s geneal¬ ogy and political alliances just as it was modelled on his unique physical form. It was, in effect, a three- dimensional portrait of the individual, a map of his place in the world, and a mirror of his masculinity. In this book Carolyn Springer examines the signifi¬ cance of early modern armour and the implications of its circulation in culture through case studies of three patrons of luxury armour studios: Guidobaldo II della Rovere (1514-75), Charles V Habsburg (1500-58, Holy Roman Emperor 1519-56), and Cosimo I de Medici (1519-74). By examining an array of objects and images from Cinquecento court culture, Springer demonstrates that Renaissance armour is not just a background to literary texts but a vibrant representa¬ tional practice in its own right.
