ABSTRACT
The year
1956
was one of the most crucial moments in the 20th century history of
Poland. It was the time when the officials from Polish United Worker s Party found
themselves in deep crisis for the first time. They were trying to find the way out from
the crisis, while being under the process of De-Stalinization on the one hand, and the
internal events on the other. In
2007
the publishers of the cycle Less Known
Poland , prepared a publication of stenographic records from the meetings of the 6th
and 7th Polish United Worker s Party Central Committee in
1956.
These documents
were not made available for the scholars. The knowledge regarding the events that
occured
50
years ago is still not sufficient, and the source materials are not complete.
The current situation needs not only to broaden and deepen the research, but it
should also try to find the way to get to the new source materials.
This volume includes for example: very interesting stenographic records from the
meetings of central active members of Polish Worker s Party, that took place on the
3rd and 4th of March, as well as on the 3rd and 4th of November. The first one was
assembled so that Political Bureau representatives, who were sent to the 20th
Communist Party of Soviet Union Congress, could inform about the events in
Moscow. The second one ends, in political terms, polish year
1956.
This publication
includes many proceedings from the Political Bureau of Polish United Worker s Party
Central Committee s sittings, that used to decide about the most important political
moves, that were made in summer of the year
1956.
It also includes the unknown
documents that concerned polish context of Nikita Khrushchev s activity. At the
beginning of the year during an ad hoc called meeting he gave a speech, which could
be called second Secret Speech and in autumn, during the break in 8th Plenum, he
took part in dramatic talks with the executives from Polish United Worker s Party
Central Committee, where
Władysław Gomułka
also took part in.
Shown document very clearly present the tragedy and the logics of the changes
that took place in the year
1956.
Very crucial for this release were the documents
archived in New Acts Archives. This work includes a foreword, published documents
(in chronological order) and indexes. The texts were printed in their original form
without any changes, maintaining the original style.
