The paper appeared till 1939. But the author is interested mainly in the internar period. The fact that Poland gained independence in 1918 caused that the centre of interest of articles that appeared in the paper was moved on the subjects connected with the shape of the political system and public life. The article contains information concerning for¬ mal development of the paper, problems connected with editorial changes and ideological changes of its authors. In contrast with other conservative papers, e.g. Czas [Time] or Vilnius Slowo [Word], Dziennik Poznański were characterized by sharp journalism to¬ wards Germany both during partitions and after regaining independence. The consequence of such attitude was a promotion of a project to form a block of states from Central-East Europe, including Russia, which would balance the supremacy of Germany in this region. As far as in¬ ternal policy was concerned, the views of editorial staff evolved from opposing Piłsudski after the May coup 1926 to supporting Pilsudski s camp in the later period. Ewa Hajdysz, Bogdan Szlachta (Jagiellonian University) Przegląd Poznański [Poznański Review] - a magazine of Polish ultramontanes from the middle of the 19th century Przegląd Poznański is a monthly magazine of political-cultural character which, over the years, became more religious. It was edited over 1845-1865 by Jan Koźmian, an eminent 19 -century conservative thinker who later became a catholic priest. Przegląd Poznański was regarded as a magazine of ultramontanes environment whose ideas, since 1 830s, became more and more popular both in Europe and Poland. Polish ultramontanes treated critically the revolution and the Slavic idea. They propagated the need of clinging to Church which gives spiritual and historical basis of moral existence of Poland. At the same time it was giving fidel¬ ity to the west culture which should preserve Poland against east oppression and pressure from Protestant Prussian state. On the basis of this premise they consequently supported the or¬ ganic program which negated the need of existence of parties and called for active legal work. Those ideas were reflected in articles published in Przegląd Poznański , especially during his¬ torical events such as e.g. Springtime of Nations or January Uprising. Journalists very often re¬ ferred to events in other countries, watching carefully social and political changes in the 19th-century Europe. Special attention was attached to events that took place in Italy and which were inseparably connected with the Apostolic See and the Pope. The following authors, including editor-in-chief, published in this magazine: priests from Ressurectionist order Piotr Semenenko and Hieronim Kajsiewicz, as well as Kajetan Koźmian, Stanisław Egbert Koźmian, 278 Summaries Andrzej Koźmian, rev. Adam J. Czartoryski and Zygmunt Krasiński. Przegląd Poznański was closed in 1 865 due to intensive attack of Prussia authorities on the activity of rev. Koźmian, which had a bad impact on his pastoral work (he decided to stop editing the magazine because he did not want to give the authorities any additional pretexts.) The magazine containing 38 volumes possesses a rich set of materials for history of Polish political thought, science, cul¬ ture, literature and philosophy. It contributes a lot to history of Polish nation whose output has not been properly appreciated or described in a detailed way so far. Anna Graca (Jagiellonian University) Krakus (1891-1895) - a conservative weekly for people The weekly Krakus appeared for the first time on January 3, 1891. It was published by the Polish Publishing Company (which was founded in December 1890) - the Publishing Company of Cracow Conservatives. Its beginning should be connected with the growth of po¬ litical activity of Polish country that was manifested by an increased number of MPs of peasant origin in the Seym after the election of 1889. Conservatives attributed this process to the in¬ fluence of magazines such as: Przyjaciel Ludu [People s Friend] edited by Maria and Bolesław Wyslouch, Wieniec [Wreath] and Pszczoła [Bee] edited by Stanisław Stojałowski. The weekly Krakus was intended to be a competition for those papers and help to gain support of peasants for conservatives. But it was badly edited; articles were not adjusted to the level and expectations of the country reader and as a method of fight with competing papers it chose in¬ vectives and insults towards their editors and readers. Although Krakus was supported by clergy, it was not popular in the country and its edition was slowly falling down. The candi¬ dates supported by Przyjaciel Ludu [People s Friend] won in the elections of 1895. This fi¬ nally sealed Krakus fate. With the end of 1895 they stopped editing it. Dariusz Szpoper, Przemysław Dąbrowski (University of Gdańsk) History of Kurier Litewski [Lithuanian Courier] over 1905-1915 Kurier Litewski , as a regular paper in Polish, was started in Vilnius on September 1 (14), 1905. Hipolit Korwin-Milewski, one of the leaders of Polish conservative gentry, re¬ ceived a licence for editing it. Kurier Litewski was a four-page periodical of political-social-lit¬ erary character. Plenty of information from Poland and abroad, many commentaries and thea¬ tre and musical reviews were placed in its columns. Since there was a fear that Russian administration could confiscate the paper, it was published [from October 3(16)] under the dif¬ ferent title Kurier Wileński [Vilnius Courier]. Because of the political rapprochement be¬ tween National-Democratic Camp and conservative circles of natives (in the half of 1911), Kurier Litewski and Goniec Codzienny [Everyday Messenger] were merged. On June 1(14) 1911 there appeared the first edition of Kurier Wileński with double numbering. Kurier Wileński returned to its previous name Kurier Litewski on January 1 (14) 1912. However, on August 10 (23) 1915, due to the risk of occupation of Vilnius by the German army, the last number of Kurier Litewski was edited. Part of the editorial staff was moved to Mińsk where they started editing Nowy Kurier Litewski [A New Lithuanian Courier] (from August 23 - September 5, 1915 till June 29 - July 1, 1917). The rest of the editing staff stayed in Vilnius and edited Mały Kurier [A Small Courier] whose total number of twenty-six issues appeared from August 11 (24) till September 5 (18) 1915. Summaries 279 Agnieszka Kidzińska (Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin) Słowo [Word] over 1905-1914 as an organ of Stronnictwo Polityki Realnej [Real Politics Party] Over 1905-1914 the paper Słowo , published in Warsaw, was an organ of Real Politics Party, the party of Polish advocates of conciliation. During this time the following persons ful¬ filled the function of editors: Antoni Donimirski, Erazm Piltz, and Józef Wielowieyski; Paweł Górski was a publisher. RPP controlled the policy of the paper both by a constant representa¬ tive and by controlling its budget. The best publicists were, among others,: Ludwik Straszewicz, Ludomir Grendyszyński, Wincenty Kosiakiewicz, Bohdan Kutyłowski, Wojciech Baranowski. Within 1909-1910 two editions: a morning and an evening one were introduced. The subjects undertaken in the paper were the reflection of RPP s political programme, so po¬ litical events were very often commented upon. These commentaries concerned the activity of Russian Parliament with special attention to Polish matters. RPP carried on polemics with other political parties. In March 1914 the censorship suspended Słowo , which meant its final decline. facek Gzella (Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń) Słowo [Word] paper of Vilnius conservatives (1922-1939) Słowo published in Vilnius within 1922-1939 was financed from financial sources of conservatives who were present in Vilnius. At the beginning they cooperated with Stronnictwo Prawicy Narodowej [Party of National Right Wing], then after their defeat in 1922 elections they cooperated with Chrześciańsko-Narodowe Stronnictwo Rolnicze [Christian-National Ag¬ riculture Party] and from 1926 they joined Józef Pikudski s camp. During the cooperation with Bezpartyjny Blok Współpracy z Rządem [Non-Party Block of Cooperation with the Govern¬ ment] Słowo , from a paper representing opinions of Vilnius conservatives, evolved into more independent paper but it did not break ties with previous patrons. At the same time it became a coordination centre of this movement. Stanisław Mackiewicz played a decisive role in the development of Słowo . He was, from the beginning, its editor-in-chief and during its last years the owner of Słowo as well. He not only encouraged many celebrities to cooperate with the paper but also he, himself, wrote very vivid and often controversial articles. During the whole period he represented, like other authors, a conservative programme which, for the Vilnius group, was restricted to postu¬ lating political changes and then, after the April Constitution, to strict compliance with it and he called for liquidation of revolutionary property changes, especially in the field of land re¬ form. Vilnius conservatives, on behalf of Poland demanded more determined actions in the field of foreign policy that would enable the Republic of Poland to return to the borders from 1772. 280 Summaries Jacek Bartyzel (Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń) Biuletyn Stronnictwa Zachowawczego [Bulletin of Conservative Party] and Pro Fide Rege et Lege (1923-1928) Two papers: Biuletyn Stronnictwa Zachowawczego [Bulletin of Conservative Party] which appeared in the years 1923-1925 and the annual Pro Fide Rege et Lege (1923-1928), which was its continuation, are the subject of this article. The first periodical was an organ of Stronnictwo Zachowawcze [Conservative Party] and was founded in October 1922 and closed in February 1926, the second one expressed the views of a group of activists and publicists who did not approve self-liquidation of the Conservative Party and its alliance with Stronnictwo Chrześciańsko-Narodowe [Christian-National Party]. As a result of this they founded, in March 1926, Klub Zachowaczo-Monarchistyczny [Conservative-Monarchist Club] Konstanty earl Broel-Plater (1872-1927) was a publisher of both papers. He was also an initiator and deputy president of Conservative Party. The editor, was CP s Secretary General, dr Kazimierz Marian Morawski (1884-1944) and their eminent contributor was Hieronim earl Tarnowski (1884-1945). He was also a co-publisher of PFRL. Such persons as, among oth¬ ers, Tadeusz Świstakowski, Marian Rudziński, Władysław Glinka, prof. Szymon Dzierzgowski and Roberto F. Davanzati cooperated with both papers. On their columns both papers presented an integral doctrine of conservatism, based on four pillars of political philosophy: religion, ethic, tradition and authority. They, in a deter¬ mined way, opted for monarchism and for granting Catholicism the status of dominant reli¬ gion in Polish state. They referred to the tradition of British conservatism (Tory party) and to royal-national Action Française. They distanced from liberalism, approved close relations with nationalism and expressed support for Italian fascism. Włodzimierz Mich (Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin) Nasza Przyszłość [Our Future] (1930-1939) This article is a brief report concerning the political role, way of editing and basic idea assumptions of Nasza Przyszłość [Our Future] published and edited by Jan Bobrzyński. The paper was founded in 1930 as a conservative monthly, connected with Stronnictwo Prawicy Narodowej [Party of National Right Wing]. Gradually its ties with the conservative movement lessened and it became a centre around which gathered political circles that created independ¬ ent structures: Koło Przyjaciół Nasza Przyszłość [Circle of Friends of Nasza Przyszłość ] and then Związek Polskiej Myśli Państwowej [Union of Polish State Thought]. The paper was ed¬ ited in a traditional way. No importance was set to graphics but the paper concentrated on programme matters. The main sphere of interests of Nasza Przyszłość was an international role of Poland. The journalists tried to describe ways to achieve by Poland a position of a re¬ gional superpower, which was treated as a condition of sustaining independence. All other pos¬ tulates concerning the political system or national policy were subordinated to this aim. The outlook of the founders of NP included both integral Catholicism and economic liberalism. Summaries 281 Tomasz Sikorski (The University of Szczecin) Wroclaw Stańczyk over 1986-2004. Genesis of the paper - editing - striving for a leader The presented article shows the functioning of liberal and conservative paper Stańczyk on the publishing market. The author concentrated his analysis especially on presenting the activity of editing staff, distribution, financing or issue. The second important problem indi¬ cated in this text is a complicated genesis, and environmental roots of the paper. Wroclaw en¬ vironment of Stańczyk , although not uniform ideologically, formed without any doubts an interesting trend of Polish conservative thought during the last twenty years. This diversity, ability to put forward daring theses and strong arguments showed its originality against the background of other environments of Polish Right Wing on the one hand and, on the other, it enabled to form an interesting Wroclaw school of political thinking . There were many views in circles connected with Stańczyk : from liberal and libertarian to conservative (presented by E. Jünger German school) and traditional and nationalistic ones. Stańczyk s conservatism was not only a nostalgia for the lost world , for desacralized order before the French Revolu¬ tion and it was not only a copy of European and American models, either. It formed a native version of daring, uncompromising conservatism that was looking for support in the experi¬ ence of past generations (E. Burk, A. Wielopolski, M. Bonrzyński, J. de Maistre, Ch. Maurras) but at the same time it did not reject the assumption of the necessity of modernization of conservative idea and adjust it to changing reality. Bogdan Borowik (Maria Curie- Skłodowska University in Lublin) Pro Fide Rege et Lege a paper of Conservative Monarchist Club Genesis and ideological assumptions of the environment connected with Klub Zacho - wawczo-Monarchistyczny [Conservative-Monarchist Club] were discussed in the introductory part of the article. The Club was a publisher of the quarterly Pro Fide Rege et Lege [For Faith, King and Law]. In the next part, the author described the characteristic features of the paper and its contents. The paper appeared in 1988. The numbers 1-9 were issued in the second cir¬ culation (illegally, out of censorship) up to 2006 Artur Górski, the president of CMC, was the editor-in-chief. 56 issues were edited by him. Pro Fide Rege et Lege evolved from four-page brochure (edited on the A4 form) into a hundred-page coloured quarterly. The paper approves monarchism, integral conservatism, traditional Catholicism and classical philosophy. These subjects were presented in the historical-ideological aspect. According to its publishers the best state political system is monarchy adjusted in its outer form to the present. Integral conserva¬ tism should be the basis of public and social life. Only the return to the principles of function¬ ing of pre-conciliar Church may divert the unfavourable tendencies of the spread of religious indifference in Europe. Neo-Tomism is the best answer for the theory-cognitive, postmodern chaos of culture. The quarterly Pro Fide Rege et Lege is now the most important modern periodical in Polish monarchist-conservative circles.
