RESUME
The Extraordinary Husband of an Extraordinary Woman
Josef
Němec
This book is the result of a major project
-
the four-volume
collected works of
Božena
Nemcová s
Correspondence
(Korespondence Boženy Němcové),
Prague
2003-2007,
which is
now in publication. It traces the fortunes of Josef
Němec
(1805-1879),
the husband of
Božena Němcová,
the famous
Czech writer and author of The Grandmother
(Babička
),
an icon
of Czech literature. It does so on the basis of archival documents,
family correspondence, resources of official provenance and his
own publications. Much of Nemec s
Efe
and that of his marriage
to
Božena Němcová
has long been in the public domain and
interpreted variously; he has often been unjustly overshadowed,
so that she might bask in a greater glory. This often happened
needlessly, because
Božena Němcová
herself can stand the test of
being a woman of exceptional literary talent and
ако
as an
exceptional personality in the wider sense of the word, regardless
of the fact that her life partner is neglected or even has his
reputation tarnished. This publication is a comprehensive study
of Josef Nemec s life, yet it also offers insights into 19th century
Czech society, especially the 1840s, the revolution of
1848/1849
and finally in the period known as Bach s absolutism, i.e. the
1850s. With the help of a biographical approach and psychologi¬
cal and social methods, it traces the many factors linked to the
birth of the modern Czech nation and modern civic society.

RESUMÉ
Josef Němec,
originally from
Nový Bydžov,
became a con¬
vinced Czech patriot under the influence of Josef
Jungmann.
He was drafted into the army as a university student
(1824),
and having served eight years, he became a finance and customs
officer. During his career, like many of his contemporaries
-
civil servants
-
he was sent to work in a number of places. The
State had a vested interest in its civil servants keeping a certain
distance from the population and for this reason they were
often transferred. Loyalty to the state and the Dynasty were
part of the official oath sworn and they were preconditions for
securing a good position and a future career. Josef
Němec
through his education, his outlook and contacts in patriotic
society, did not fit the stereotype of an ordinary civil servant.
His fortunes had been influenced by his posting to
Polná
and
especially to Prague
(1844-1846),
the centre of Czech patriotic
society. Indeed, even during his stay at
Chodsko (Domažlice,
Všeruby)
he was already actively involved in the revolutionary
events of
1848/1849
on the side of those who were enforcing
new orders and promoting new ideas. As a result of this con¬
duct, he, as a financial official, was transferred several times in
the ensuing years
(Nymburk, Liberec).
Later on, when he
realized the hopelessnes of his prospects in Bohemia, he
applied for a post in Hungary where a new administrative
system was being established. However, even there his „revolu¬
tionary past caught up with him, namely in repeated investiga¬
tions of his revolutionary activities. The state apparatus
unleashed a new wave of investigations after the assassination
attempt on the Emperor s life in February
1853.
Josef
Němec
resisted its course: he did not apologize for his behaviour;
indeed, he presented explanations; he put up resistance; he
protested against provisional judgements, but he also took
some ill-advised steps, which made things much worse for him.
His was an impetuous personality, definitely not of an indul¬
gent nature, as the weeks of investigations, which started in the
spring of
1853,
turned into months and in fact years. He was
separated from his family and his oldest son had in the mean-
321
JOSEF NÉMEC
time died, thus he became disgruntled because in his opinion,
indifferent and erring officials did not deal with him as an equal
partner- as in the past. Furthermore, he felt that he could not
provide the required standard of living for his family as he had
wished and as befitted their contemporary middle-class status.
This work also throws light upon the procedures of the state
apparatus through a detailed description and analysis of this
investigation. Josef
Němec
can, thus, serve as an example of
the state s authority in society, and indeed, not merely with
regard to literary figures and artists, although traditionally they
have been the obvious and more attractive topics for media and
historical research.
When the
Němec
investigations were completed, he had to
accept his demotion and he also had to accept a post once more
far from his family in the distant province of Carinthia. He also
had to reconcile himself with his social debasement, as many of
his former friends and acquaintances avoided social contact
with him; instead of continuing to be the mainstay of his family,
he was in fact becoming its burden. Instead of acquiring
a respectable post, which he could claim, based on his previous
professional assessments, he had to accept short-term tempo¬
rary posts, because the pension he had been awarded was long
way short from covering the outgoings of a family with three
dependent children
(Karel, Dora, Jaroslav).
There were no great prospects for the
Němecs
as husband
and wife after
1853.
At that time
Němcová
resolved to stay
with her children in Prague on her own, while
Němec
stayed
outwith Prague due to the investigations he was subject to and
later because of his casual employment elsewhere. Husband
and wife missed each other greatly and it was at that time
-
quite undestandably
-
that affectionate declarations of love
appeared in their letters; not merely from the pen of the famous
writer but also from the pen of the otherwise brusque and
uncompromising financial official.
Researchers up to now have rather unilaterally emphasised
what had divided Josef
Němec
and his wife
Božena;
how their
322
RESUMÉ
views differed. This publication reminds us rather what it was
that united the couple. Evidence for this can be found in their
letters from the periods of their long separation. There we have,
among others, the testimony that
Němec
collected (to put it in
a modern way) ethnographic materials that could have been of
interest to his wife and which she could well have used in her
work. Through their attitudes the couple openly demonstrated
their convictions and links with their contemporary circles of
friends. In
1856
they jointly appeared at the burial of
Karel
Havlíček,
a historical event which has been analysed many
times. Even the authorities acknowledged their strong bond.
The later day-to-day existence of the couple in Prague, afflicted
by poverty, illness and various medical conditions, made their
life together a misery. These were factors which limited their
existence both in the ideal sense of the word and the material
one, also. Without any doubt, these realities introduced to their
married life reasons for irritation and escalating tension which
led to a crisis.
It is possible that a daring, although in many aspects incor¬
rect, parallel would be that between Josef
Němec
and
Karel
Havlíček,
a symbol of the „Czech 19th century . Indeed, their
circumstances coincided several times. Both of them fought
stubbornly and would not retreat; they did not budge when
others cowered. Yet, compared to
Havlíček, Němec
in addition
struggled for every penny, he did not have any financial
reserves nor a materially solid family background. He was not
a „writer
-
a man of the pen (and for a long time to come it was
unusual or unwelcome for a civil servant to publish their
political views in periodicals), and he, thus, did not have the
support of anyone or the advantage of „public opinion . Josef
Němec
drank from this poisoned chalice for a long time and in
small measures.... He did not become a martyr in death as
Karel
Havlíček
did, but rather a torturer and tormentor of his excep¬
tional wife. He lived to see his children reach adulthood
(Karel,
Dora and
Jaroslav)
and provide him with grandchildren to
whom he devoted the final years of his life; he could also enjoy
323
JOSE?
NĚMEC
their successes. Contrary to his wife who dreamt of successful
careers
f
or her children and had made huge sacrifices to this end
but did not live to see this hope fulfilled
.....
The use of the biographical method in this book became
a means to clarify and penetrate the more generalised connec¬
tions of Czech 19th century history and not merely to map out
only a single life. Thanks to the chosen method and the wealth
and range of resources we enter more easily into the manner of
thinking, or the mentality of the period when modern Czech
society was being formed through the conflict-rich biography
of Josef
Němec.
It did not merely make more accessible one
important chapter of his life, namely police persecution.
Thanks to Josef Nemec s personal correspondence, we also
come to learn about the inter-ethnic relations in places where
Josef
Němec
found himself. What is important is the fact that
Josef
Němec
was open to these matters; that he thought about
them and managed to define them for us; he also managed to
write about them. It was the same in other sensitive matters for
the emerging emancipation of Czech society, such as schooling,
the standard of education or public subscriptions for a future
national theatre. After the defeat of the Revolution of
1848/1849,
all the above concerns supplanted a paralysed
political activity and in one sense, very eloquently indeed,
symbolised the revolutionary demands of the Spring of
1848.
