ORADEA
AND
BIHOR
COUNTY DURING THE INTERWAR
PERIOD
(Abstract)
The artistic-cultural life that pulsated during the
internar
Bihor
County has been agitated and affiliated itself with the tempestuous
alternation of the ascending and descending courses noted at the level of the
period in discussion.
Concerning the theatrical movement, the main care referred to the
constitution of a constant Romanian theatrical troupe in
Oradea
that was to
bring in front of the public the main works of the Romanian and universal
dramaturgy. By means of the
Teatrul
de
Vest ( The Western Theatre ), set
up as a result of some energy actions, they have organized along the whole
Western strip of the country, a succession of cultural propaganda artistic tours
that brought in front of the public theatrical performances of quality with the
subjects taken over from the national and universal literature. When this one
was falling off, the local Romanian theatre was supplied by the National and
private Theatres in the country
(Bucureşti, Cluj, Iaşi,
Craiova) that attained to
support the idea of Romanian theatre at the Western border of the country by
means of some theatrical tours composed by well-known names of the national
stage.
The musical life proved to be an important element in the diffusion
process of the national country. A phenomenon with echo especially in the
urban environment, the musical show has penetrated more and more
insistently also the reality of the rural world, where they have organized a real
net of rustic choirs that activated having remarkable results for consolidating
the national and religious feeling in the middle of the rural communities. The
musical shows have brought in front of the auditory the main compositions of
the great Romanian artists, without omitting from the musical programmes the
famous arias of the greatest classics works of the universal music that have
been included in the international patrimony of the cultural values. The
interest of the
Bihor
County s public for this form of cultural propaganda has
been continuously increasing, this fact being also a result of the presence of
some well-known names of the national and European musical life (for
example, George Enescu) in
Oradea
and other places of the county. Generally
Radu Romînaşu
speaking, the artistic programmes succeeded to satisfy the exigencies of the
music fan audience that became receptive to such forms of contact with the
cultural act.
The movie shows and the exhibitions came to supplement in an
innovating sense the series of the cultural means that tried to get an important
role in the
Bihor
County s society life. They succeeded to capture the attention
and the preference of the art consuming public, especially of that in the urban
environment. The components had as aim a cultural function, proving also to
be optimal moments for spending the free time. The cinema has showed
especially European and American productions with great impact to the
public. Step by step, on the big screens of the county they have also passed
films of the autochthonous cinema industry that focused on the development
of some national-cultural functions. They followed the change of the seventh
art in an efficient mean of enlightenment that was to be used also in the
education process, although this problem determined a lot of pro and versus
debates among the professors, teachers and men of culture.
The art exhibitions or those of other nature contributed, on their turn,
undoubtedly, to the cultural promotion of the society in
Crişana
during the
interwar period. Their novelty attracted the public especially that of the urban
environment, which being sat in front of a systematic exercise
-
even if
sometimes traversed by small defections
-,
ended by considering the exhibition
as a modern cultural experience that has to be contemplated, felt and lived.
The exhibition also had the merit to dislocate the old mental staff, to grow up
the person
-
regarding the esthetical problems
-
being carried out slowly, but
continuously. To this fact, the press had also a contribution; it knew how to
capture the readers interest towards these artistic demonstrations, to
formulate around them a modern message, supplied by gestures, behaviours
and attitudes directed to the future.
Generally speaking, the
Bihor
County s public was receptive to the
diffusion of the cultural act by means of the artistic demonstrations, being
conscious of the necessity of gathering the spiritual energies in order to
strengthen the proposed objectives in
1918.
If, there also were periods when
the local Romanian society didn t answer according as the efforts made by the
cultural societies of the time, they have been
-
firstly
-
determined by the
financial problems that had appeared especially between
1929-1933,
the
difficult situation going on after the great economical crisis, too.
All the artistic-cultural steps concretized by means of the theatrical and
film show, of the musical concerts and the exhibitions arranged under different
forms, finally regarded the objectives clearly formulated by the national and

cultural
factors: the consolidation in the civic Romanian society of the
national solidarity and the increase of the cultural prestige of the nation at the
European and world level.
The cultural and artistic initiatives started under the impulse of the
development of the interwar association process, succeeded, to a great extent,
to satisfy the
Bihor
County society pretensions and lead to fulfil the
desideratum of the spiritual unity of all the Romanians living in the Western
zone of the country, as an integrated part of the completed Romania.
