Summary
Kostiantyn Ushynsky paved a new way for the
development of education on the grounds of science,
humanism and democracy. His pedagogical system
aimed at the thorough study of the human being. He also
explored the norms and goals of teaching and upbringing
as social phenomena. He was the first to apply the
anthropological approach to pedagogy and correlate it
with psychology and other humanities. Ushynsky
believed that correctly organized upbringing plays the
primary role in the physical, intellectual and moral
development of an individual. According to Ushynsky,
a personality should be moulded with regard to the
national character, for the young generation should be
nationally aware and patriotic, able to put into practice
progressive social and economic reforms, and to preserve
and develop the national culture. Important tools in
raising such a personality would be, in Ushynsky s
opinion, the mother tongue, literature and history. In his
theory, every nation should establish its own nationally
oriented school in both form and content, and at the same
time take into account common European pedagogical
advancements.
The outstanding pedagogue proposed to include the
latest scientific and technological achievements into the
content of education and to inculcate moral and spiritual
values, the serious treatment of life, love for work and a
hand for work with the young. Ushynsky did a lot to
spread the theory and practice of developmental
education. For this sake, he improved primary school
teaching methods, compiled new text books and advised
teachers on how to use visual teaching aids, how to
conduct lessons and how to lead a didactic discussion.
He highly appraised the teacher s value in society,
contributed to the establishment of humanistic pedagogy
and the surmounting of authoritarianism and bureau¬
cracy. Due to Ushynsky s effort, colleges and training
courses for teachers were founded, various issues of
education and upbringing came up for discussion in the
mass media, in teaching meetings and in youth hobby
groups.
Ushynsky s activity was a launch pad for the elabo¬
ration of the national school and the development of
pedagogical thought in Ukraine. Many Ukrainian
intellectuals took his ideas and elaborated upon them.
These ideas have not lost their topicality even now.
Ushynsky loved Ukraine, her people, her culture and
language. He was convinced that the path to a better
future for the nation runs through the development of
the national school, quality education, the enlightenment
of the people writ large, the community s interest in
schools, and the high professional as well as social status
of the teacher. Ushynsky s personality and his life also
serve as an example of commitment to science and
enlightenment, diligence, courage and adherence to
principles.
