Cajal, widely considered to be the founder of neuroscience, developed techniques and discovered fundamental principles of neural connectivity and organization, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine and/or Physiology in 1906. Cajal s advancements in the field form the foundations of much of the current work carried out by modem neuroscientists. The chapters in this book are authored by current leaders in the field of neuroscience and address three principal topics that Cajal studied intensively. The first section is focused on brain development and its relevance to disease states in humans. Topics include the well-known Cajal-Retzius cell and its vital role in the proper formation of the six layers of the cerebral cortex. Other topics in this section include hypothalamic development, neural tube defects in humans and EEG development in infants. The second section describes aspects of brain aging and the changes that occur in degenerative disorders. Topics include the loss of myelinated axons in the aged brain, changes to dopamine neurons in Parkinson s disease, and molecular and cellular changes found in the brains of humans with Alzheimer s disease and epilepsy. The third section includes chapters on the brain s neuroplastic and regenerative capabilities and the implications for central nervous system (CNS) repair. This section includes a discussion of key factors that may contribute to spinal cord regeneration after injury.
