This rich collection of his writing is a sharp reminder of the man’s perseverance, commitment, and distinction. The product of an activist who is also a theoretician, a political organizer who is also a serious writer, Rustin’s essays and articles provide a clear, balanced, and deeply moving history of the struggle for civil rights in America over the past three decades. Down the Line chronicles the changing concerns and tactics of the Negro’s fight for justice. Indeed, Bayard Rustin’s own career offers a mini-history, of sorts, of the civil rights movement: In the 1940’s Rustin served twenty-two days on a chain gang in North Carolina for crashing Jim Crow barriers. In the fifties he was one of the first Freedom Riders. In the sixties he organized the most successful of the marches on Washington and was a constant adviser to Martin Luther King, Jr. Rustin was also the first major civil rights leader to call for a shift in Negro priorities from protest to politics. Although much of Bayard Rustin’s writing was originally done on the run, it all holds up magnificently. The reason for this is that Rustin, unlike those black leaders who have rushed upon—and just as quickly been rushed off—the scene, has always written and worked from a set of radical principles. In addition to being an integrationist and a believer in the strategy of the ballot and of coalition politics, Rustin has long insisted that “nothing less than a radical refashioning of our political economy” is involved in bringing equality and true civil rights not merely to blacks but to all Americans. C. Vann Woodward, the distinguished American historian, best sums up the quality of Bayard Rustin’s life and writing when, in his Introduction, he notes: “Too ripe a political philosopher to hope for instant solutions, Rustin is able to hold to his belief in revolution and accept the inevitable frustrations and setbacks. Too experienced in the ways of the world to expect reason and logic always to prevail, he is ready to take account of the irrational and the illogical as means to an end as well as obstacles to be overcome_____His words will bear comparison with those of other spokesmen of revolt in our history, and it is not the rebels alone who stand to profit from their wisdom.”
