adam_text THE MEN & IDEAS SERIES L.Cr. 8vo · 192 pages · price 13/6 net First three volumes : ι. TUDOR ECONOMIC PROBLEMS by Peter Ramsey Lecturer in History, the University of Bristol II. POLITICAL IDEAS 1760-1792 by R. W. Harris Master of Studies, & Head of the History Department, The King s School, Canterbury III. THE LIBERAL PARTY FROM EARL GREY TO ASQUITH by R. B. McCallum Master of Pembroke College, Oxford Further volumes in preparation MEN AND IDEAS Lord Acton s dictum to study prob¬ lems, not periods is today widely accepted as the best advice to the historian. Yet the student is finding it increasingly difficult to study history with the aid of a general textbook. The Men and Ideas series has been designed to supplement where the need is greatest. It aims to present authoritative and readable studies of significant historical problems. The subjects have been specially chosen as vital to the understanding of the age with which they are concerned, and these books should therefore be of importance to all history students. At the same time these are not dry, academic studies ; their lively presen¬ tation should appeal to any general reader who has an interest in the past. Political Ideas 1760-1792 seeks to explain the political ideas that were influential during the first half of the reign of George III. There is a danger that in paying too much attention to the political mechanics of the 18th century the student will fail to see what ideas and intentions lay behind the thought and action of the time. Here the ideas of George III, Charles James Fox, Burke, Chatham, Június, Pitt, Bentham, Adam Smith and the Saints are placed in perspective.
