The person, between the effort and the result
in the affirmation process of the Bulgarian
urban culture
S ummary
The fourth volume of the serial Problems of the Bulgarian urban culture is
dedicated to the role of the person in the creation and affirmation of the national
city-type culture. Principally, the subject is not a new one for the historians, who
already mention, in studies from Bulgarian Renaissance period, the most distinct
figures, who have put the foundation of the New Bulgarian culture. The
ethnology, which usually studies the anonymous carrier of the culture
-
creator
of traditional values, in the process of venturing into new subject matters, one
of which is the study of the city culture, stumbles upon sources, which
personally name the most distinct participants in the cultural processes. In
practice, this makes possible the overcoming of the anonymity in naming the so
called carrier of the culture, which gives the opportunity, the history of the
Bulgarian culture, from the Renaissance to the present, to be enriched not only
with details of the new incoming forms in the spheres of the communication,
spirituality and the material surrounding but also with little known, or hardly
mentioned in the past names.

liberation period public figure and statesman Alexander Bogoridi, the rest of the
figures, subject of study, are less known today, but not at the time when they
have been creator figures and organizers of the cultural life in Bulgaria: Ivan

of attention looks random only at first sight. For part of the researcher (M.
Harbova,
Iv.
Petrova,
A. Kirilova, E. Bliznashka) the link with the studied figure
is conditioned by further or closer family link. In the rest of the cases the
meeting with the studied figure is a result of a lucky hit on a person, who
captured the attention of the ethnologist with his work.
The people, presented in this volume, come from different circles and have
different degree of social realizations. One is a statesman (A. Bogoridi), others
participate in the municipality (George Dragoshinov, Todor Peshov), third point
their communal activities toward building up the national science and artistic
culture (the representatives of the
Govedarovi
family, Boykinovi family and Iliya
Yovchev), fourth make successful attempts in strengthening the position of the
local manufacturing as factory owners and craftsmen (G. Dragoshinov,
N.
Petrov).
Their common characteristic is, that they are all searching people, who
spread their working energy in different directions. Except the wealth of gifts,
they also posses the will to put them to work. Along with their main obligations
as statesman, public figures and professionals (teachers, lawyers, journalists,
traders, craftsmen) they promote different cultural activities (theater, literature,
music, festivities, new forms of interpersonal communication) by organizing or
participating in different groups and circles of interests.
From our present point of view about the centered national culture, the
figures are mainly representatives of the provincial intellectuals (Koprivshtitsa,
Sevlievo, Plovdiv). Along this line, new evidences are uncovered concerning the
role of the starting, mainly village surrounding, and the provincial town (village
of Jeliava near Sofia; the big village, which is the status of Koprivshtitsa during
the period of the Bulgarian Renaissance; the small town of Sevlievo) in the
Bulgarian urbanization process. The village root becomes the strong base upon
which the Bulgarian replants the knowledge learned in Europe and America. The
common cense and the respect toward the traditional values, as well as the
ability for realistic estimation of the local conditions, make possible the critical
attitude toward the foreign cultural influences. Along this line of taught the press
plays a special role in the popularization of the ideas about the Bulgarian way of
cultural development.
The common thing for the people presented in this volume, is that they all
come from distinct renaissance families. Their interests toward the struggle for
spiritual uplifting and country building, which has its beginning in the Bulgarian
Renaissance, finds realization after the Liberation.
