ANNOTATION
Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares Vocal Ensemble,
the
former
Bulgarian
State
Television Female
Vocal Choir,
has emerged as an
ensemble
of rare artistic gifts and enormous popular appeal.
Established in
1952
the choir s first mission was to record authentic
and arranged for muhivoice choir folk songs for the radio and TV
programmes as well as to perform broadcast concerts. Soon its
reputation grows beyond Bulgaria, resulting in tours in other Eastern
Block nations then Europe and the Near East.
Almost at the same time, the early fifties, Marcel
Cellier,
the swiss
music producer discovers Bulgarian folk songs, folk singers, their
voices and choral skill and in
1975
releases his first album
-
Volume
I, which soon becomes a best seller. Twelve years later
-
in
1987
appears volume II, that earns in
1990
to Marcel
Cellier
and RTVChoir,
as a main performer, the American Grammy award. It .was then
that the choir was named LMDVB and in
1988
is the beginning of its
triumphant touring
- 5
times in the USA and Canada,
3
times in Latin
America, annual tours in all European countries,
4
times in Japan,
concerts in India, Hong Kong, etc.
Electra-Nonesuch Records releases Cellier s Volume I, II, III
and Universal music volume IV with sales of more than a quarter
of a million albums and over a million internationally. Among the
choir admirers are Linda Rondstadt, Paul Simon, Pat Metheny, Bobby
McFerrin, Graham Nash. St. Lois Post Despatch states: The most
beautiful music on the planet . The choir s unique and eerily beautiful
sound has become a popular compliment for a wide range of artistic
endeavours, including film sound tracks and modern dance
choreography- Gesus of Montreal , Palace Hotel , AT&T
(commercial), recordings with Cronos quartet, CDs
-
Mystère ,
Pippero , Bulgarian custom songs , Rituals with Grammy
nomination for
1994,
Vanessa Mey s Songs . Since the fall of the
totalitarian regime in Bulgaria in
1989
and consequent structure
changes in the State Radio and TV system the RTV choir remains
154
attached only to the Bulgarian National Television up to
1997,
when
it continues it artistic activity as a free license professional choir. All
kinds of piracy and unsubstantiated claims to the name of LMDVB
are an illegal action as the name and the trade mark have their home
and international registration
(628,30.03.1990,
INRA
-
Sofia
&
560614,1.07.1990,
OMPI
-
Geneve) and they are given to the Choir
by their owner M.Ceilier for the concert exploitation. The conductor
and artistic director
-
Dora Hristova, PhD and an associated professor
at the Acagemy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts
-
Plovdiv, leads the
group since
1988
and is the lecturer of its numerous workshops all
over the world.
The choir is awarded with
Cristal
Lyre and Golden Lyre of
The Union of Bulgarian Music and Dance Workers,
Le
Grand Prix
des Sallon
des
Arts of the National Palace of Culture, Sofia. It truly
represents one of the most amazing success stories in all of music.
The members are
25
singers, recruited from the rural regions of
Bulgaria. Its skill
-
open throat singing
-
is to combine the country s
solo folk songs with harmonies, that highlight their unique beautiful
timbres, irregular rhythms and picturesque traditional costumes. The
performances of The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices Vocal Choir
(LMDVB Choir) are praised by both classical and popular critics,
but more important, hundreds of thousands of music lovers of ail
ages offer standing ovations in appreciations of this unusual musical
discovery.
Anotation from an American concert programme:
The Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir
Now on its fifth national tour of North America, the Bulgarian
State Television Female Vocal Choir has emerged as an ensemble of
rare artistic gifts and enormous popular appeal. Established in
1952,
the Choir s first mission was to perform broadcast concerts of folk
songs arranged for multi-voice choir. Soon, its reputation grew beyond
its native country, resulting in tours of other Eastern-bloc nations,
then of Europe and the Middle East.
155
The Choir s success in North America began in
1988
with the
release of
Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, Volume
I,
on
Elektra
None¬
such
Records.
The recording rose to Billboard s top
200
chart,
prompting the ensemble s first North American concert tour. In
1990,
the Choir returned for a month of concerts and media appearances,
including coverage on ABC s World News Tonight, NBC s Nightly
News, the Tonight and Today shows. Since then, its audience has
grown to encompass aficionados of vocal music and opera as well as
folk, ethnic and rock fans. Among the Choir s admirers are Linda
Ronstadt, Paul Simon, Pat Metheny, Bobby McFerrin and Midori.
The year
1990
also saw the release of
Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares,
Volume
II, which earned the
choir a Grammy
award. The two
volumes
to date have garnered
sales
of more than a quarter of a million
recordings, and have led to further coast-to-coast tours in major
concert halls and college auditoriums. Most recently the Choirs unique
and eerily beautiful sound has become a popular complement for a
wide range of artistic endeavors, including film soundtracks and
modern dance choreography.
Elektra
Nonesuch Records has just released a new recording by
the Choir entitled Ritual. With a new sense of spiritual freedom taking
hold in Bulgaria, Ritual appropriately features music from religious
and celebratory occasions. The beautiful collection of songs is
complemented by lively
instrumentals
featuring the Choir s long¬
standing touring quartet, led by
Atañas
Valtchev.
Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares-Uncovering
the Mystery
In
1951,
the father of Bulgarian concert folk music, Philip Koutev,
established the Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic. His goal was to
join the rich heritage of his country s solo folk songs with harmonies
and arrangements that highlighted their beautiful timbres and irregular
rhythms.
One year later, the Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female
Vocal Choir was founded. Then as now, its members are singers from
the rural regions of Bulgaria, each an informal apprentice in the folk
songs of her home. The ensemble, now under the direction of
conductor Dora Hristova, has refined Koutev s original idea into a
156
fine art. The Choir s imaginatively arranged songs join traditional
folk melodies with sophisticated harmonies and compelling rhythms,
performed in an exotic six-part vocal style. Repertoire is drawn from
arrangements created by Bulgaria s most esteemed composers, among
them Mr. Koutev, Krasimir Kyurkchiyski, Nikolai Kaufman and
Petar
Lyondev.
Bulgaria, a country only the size of Ohio, has brought forth many
musical dialects, in large part because of the isolation of its regions.
No fewer than five mountain ranges describe Bulgaria s primary
folklore regions: Shope,
Pirin,
Rhodope, Thrace, Strandzha,
Dobrudzha and North Bulgaria.
As numerous as the mountains are the vocal styles that have been
in development since the Middle Ages. In the western Shope and
Pirin
lands, sparse melodies are sung over a low, sustained tone. Shope
singers specialize in heart-stopping dissonances, which are often
improvised by the singers and then lingered upon.
Pirin
Macedonians
also sing with a drone, but their intervals are larger and the melodies
more flowing.
In the eastern Rhodope region, sweeping melodies take over, some
with a distinctly pentatonic flavor. The central Thracian plain features
slower music with unmetered melodies and spectacular vocal
ornamentation and vibrato. To the north, in Dobrudzha and North
Bulgaria, lilting melodies and lighter ornamentation can spin as lightly
as gossamer lace.
You will hear examples of all these vocal styles tonight, both from
soloists and the full choir. Drawn from many regions, once disparate
folkloric dialects blend as one, in a modern evocation of an indigenous
musical tradition. It is the beguiling beauty of the individual voice
that strikes one first; it is the artful elaboration of its timbres, rhythms
and spirit achieved through contemporary arrangements that moves
one to wonder.
