GLOBALIZAM
AND TERRORISM
SUMMARY
The starting point of this study is the insight that the development of
human civilization has been always based on the permanent fight for ava¬
ilable resources. In that light one could interpret the growth of all suc¬
cessful societies: the growth of technique and organized political might
has been connected with military strength. The relatively new phenome¬
na as the process of globalization and Islamic terrorism could be placed
in the context of the battle for scarce resources in the new circumstances.
The precondition for the understanding of basic imbalance of power in the
world was the disappearance of the Soviet Union. The absence of former
opposition between capitalist and communist societies did not bring to the
world relaxation of the danger of nuclear war, but has added a new dyna¬
mic through the various ethnic conflicts and NATO interventions
(Serbią
Iraq, Afghanistan). It is obvious that the United States as the only super¬
power of our days has started to behave as the global arbiter in the World
events. The general ideology of its actions is the mission in the promoting
democracy and free world trade. However, the consequences seem just
the opposite: instead of more stabilization, we are witnessing more and
more unpredic.ted violence, interventions and chaos. So, at the beginning
of the new millennia we can even speak about hard confrontation betwe¬
en Western interests and Islamic countries. The visible effect of the fun¬
damental disagreement is to be seen through the spectacular actions of
Islamic terrorist on the one side, and the occupation of Afghanistan and
Iraq, on the other side.
It brings us to the roots of Islamists political and religious fundamen¬
talism that has spread out during the last twenty years. The main reason
84
for it cannot be traced to the religious fatalism aiming at the re-establis¬
hment of Old Caliphate, as some Western experts urge. The revival of re¬
ligion in the Islamic world and popularity of extreme terrorist groups co¬
uld be estimated as the reaction to the one-sided policy of the West (do-
minantly US) in promoting its own selfish interests. Therefore, instead of
the old confrontation between Capitalism and Communism we are wit¬
nessing the clash between civilizations, that has the features of a religio¬
us war. In that context, Islamic radicalism could be seen as one of the con¬
sequences of the cold war confrontations, as well as a result of the new
global strategy of the only remaining superpower.
But behind the animosity of different cultural paradigms, there are
deep geo-strategic interests. If wee look at the issues from the perspecti¬
ve of great political powers how to obtain the scarce resources in the long
run, then we will see why the territories of Iraq, Iran, the Near East and
Caspian Region are so important. By permanently violating the right of
the Palestinians, by the occupation of Iraq and the threat to Iran, hetero¬
geneous Islamic World has become more united in the hate toward the
West.
One of the characteristics of the world today is that International in¬
stitutions have lost their former legitimacy. The result is the uncontrolled
use of power on all sides in the conflict. The question is how to stop the
violence that threats the very existence of the basic values of civilization.
Key words: globalization, Islamic terrorism, natural resources, su¬
perpower, exploatation,.
