Each of his large photographs is assembled from dozens, sometimes hundreds, of shots that may have taken minutes or months to accumulate. Filled with detail and subtle clues to their own process of making, these works reward slow, patient looking. This publication, which accompanies a spring 2007 one-person exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, focuses on pictures that deal with life in contemporary Israel. Their subjects include young people strolling on a street in Tel Aviv; a group of men playing cards in a cafe in East Jerusalem; a gathering of devout Orthodox Jews on a pilgrimage; the interior of a convenience store bursting with products as diverse as the Israeli population; and a confrontation between Israeli police and Israeli settlers during the forced evacuation of the Gaza Strip. Dense with fact and symbol, the photographs register echoes of both Exodus and the evening news.
