this book chronicles the Trinidad Carnival from
1839
to
1989.
From the masked balls in the great
houses of the French planters, we see Carnival take
on a different tone after the abolition of slavery in
1838.
From
1839
to the end of the century, police re¬
pression is the focal point culminating in the canbou-
lay riots of
1881.
A dramatic change comes in the
1890s. Violence wanes. Asphalt streets come to
Port-of-Spain so costumes don t drag in the dust.
Carnival is slowly becoming a spectacle. Tamboo-
bamboo and string bands replace the canboulay
drums.
Then the book examines the new era in Carnival
from
1901
to the outbreak of the First World War in
1914.
Heavy war restrictions from Carnival
1915
to
Carnival
1918
all but obliterate the festival. With the
Victory in
1919
the Trinidad Guardian sponsors a
Victory Carnival at the Queen s Park Savannah.
The book describes this Carnival, and from then on
it is able to describe Carnival in detail, year by year,
from
1919
to
1989.
It gives a close-up picture of the
bands, the music, and the weather, it tells of the Pano¬
rama competitions, the Calypso Monarcns, the Jour
Ouvert
kings and queens, the kings and queens of the
bands, the road marches, and the Bands of the Year.
Parade of the Carnivals is an essential reference
book on Trinidad s biggest festival.
