This text maps Smolik's acti¬ vities in the Czech Royal Society of Sciences, the Czech Kingdom Museum and the Archaeological Board of the Czech Kingdom Museum, the Union of Czech Mathematicians and the Czech Academy of the Emperor Francis Joseph I for science, literature and arts, the Austrian company für Münz und Medaillenkunde, Museum is devoted to one of these societies and characterizes Smolik's position and his activities in the organizations mentioned above. The short third chapter concerns Smolik's mathematical textbooks. As a teacher of mathematics, Josef and commercial calculus for students of the secondary schools. As far as the textbooks on algebra are considered, his task was rather difficult as they were nearly the first texts concerned with this topic in Czech language. He thus opened the field for the forthcoming Czech teachers and students. Even when the scientific level of his textbooks is not high, their importance for the future development of Czech education in the 19th century was significant. The long fourth chapter is dedicated to the Czech translations of Euclid's Elements. It describes an unsuccessful attempt of the Union of Czech Mathe¬ maticians between for his translation of Elements, translational efforts of František in Servit.
