SUMMARY
Political ideology of Svetozar Miletic arose in time of Eu¬
ropean civil revolutions and under their direct influence; and
according to a need for a clear and long-term definition of the
basic goals of the Serbian liberal politics in the
archy and, indirectly, in the Ottoman Empire and Serbian
princedoms in Serbia and Montenegro. Basic principles of Mi-
letic s political ideology were built on the basis of respecting the
natural rights and were derived from historical experience which
referred to up to that time s insufficiently successful
cooperation between the Serbian church hierarchy and the Ser¬
bian political elites in Austria with the Royal Court in Vienna
and the Hungarian parliament, also including the necessity of a
more rational perception of the starting points of interest of the
great powers in the unresolved matter of the East. Key aspects

national and political aspirations in every region where Serbs
were living. His name became a synonym and symbol of the
righteous straggle for national and democratic rights of politi¬
cally unequal nations. As the pioneer and leader of the Serbian
National Liberal Party, he persistently came out against the ideas
of a Great State of Hungary and a Great state of Croatia, con¬
sidering them to be threatening to the national identity of the
Serbian people and confronting them with a principle of togeth¬
erness and Serbo-Croatian political equality in Croatia,
and
Hungarians in Hungary which implied a guarantee of ecclesias¬
tic, educational, political and territorial autonomy. With the re¬
organization of the
without accepting the idea of federalization of Hungary on
grounds of respecting the national principle, Miletic s political
philosophy, from the time of Schmerling s temporary solution,
was somewhat changed in the field of pragmatic politics, but
remained at a level of principle which was implied by liberal
democratic politics of civil Europe. Based on Nemanjic s gov¬
ernmental tradition of privileged rights as historical legacy of
Serbian politics and on modern principles of nationalities, na¬
tional sovereignty and constitutionality, Miletic political ideol¬
ogy gained great trust of the liberally and nationally oriented ma¬
jority of Serbian people, especially in Austrian-Hungarian state.
In an irreconcilable conflict of the Hungarian Great State idea,
which, after Austro-Hungarian and Cro-Hungarian agreement
implied an institutional upholding of Hungarisation, and Serbian
national idea, which manifested through demands of keeping
religious and national rights and the need to realize an overall
political autonomy, Miletic s politics showed as reconcilable and
tolerant towards the Hungarian liberals before the Agreement
and nation-building and unyielding after the Agreement. In the
written political program of the party of Miletic s liberals it is

precisely specified the orientation towards consistent upholding
of democratic and national politics of the Serbian people in or¬
der to liberate Serbian countries on the Balkans and to rebuke
Austro-Hungarian politics which deprived Serbs of the right of
an equal political status.
PoHtical disagreement and distrust of the Obrenovic dy¬
nasty towards Miletic s politics, National Party, and according to
his vision, realization of national liberation lasted until the
breaking out of the Great Eastern crisis and Serbo-Turkish war,
and to great extent, marked Miletic s ideology and his political
activity. Differences in attitudes about national and foreign poli¬
tics between Obrenovic and Miletic s liberals at most came
down to differences in judging the most convenient moment of
starting the war against the Ottoman Empire, and in order to
create greater and more liberal Serbian state. Critiques which he
directed to insufficiently democratic regime in Serbia were di¬
rectly depending on the readiness of the Serbian authority to
introduce Serbia into war for the liberation of Bosnia and Her¬
zegovina. Petrovic dynasty in Montenegro saw in Miletic s and
Serbian liberals in Hungary an honest political ally and admirer.
Seen and known in Serbia as Serbian Sparta, Montenegro repre¬
sented a stronghold of Serbian votive thought, and an idea of
giving the montenegrian rulers Serbian throne in the future, in¬
dependent and enlarged Serbian state, wasn t strange to Miletic.
Consistency in stating the need for democratic organization of
the governmental power didn t have priority in Miletic s political
ideology when looking at the actions for Serbian national libera¬
tion. Same goes for his viewpoint towards politics of the great
forces. For the politics of the imperial Russia he showed no
special understanding, but he wished for the taking of this great
Slavonic state in the appropriate time, as contribution of just
aspirations of the Balkan nations for liberation from
slavery.

Liberal
in political actions of his party as directly opposed to the inter¬
ests of Hungarian government, which tended to keep at bay any
activity contrary to the ideals of a unique St Stefan s Hungary.
Esteemed Serbian politics seemed a particular success of such
Great Hungarian politics and marked, in many segments, the
essential revision and annulment of Miletic s politics consisted
in a claim for realization of politically separate existence for
Serbs in Hungary. Constituting and upholding new Serbian lib¬
eral parties, built on the basis of Miletic s political thought and
his political activity, are the proof that the definite historical de¬
feat of Miletic s ideology was avoided, and that the parliamen¬
tary struggle for Serbian national and democratic rights in
Austro-Hungary held out as justified, possible and necessary.
Basic national and liberal components of political ideology of
Svetozar Miletic represented a safe guidance towards the deci¬
sion which was made in
