HSU This interdisciplinary collection of essays explores intersections between geography and American literary history, from the earliest geographic chronicles of the New World to the massive geopolitical trans¬ formation of the 1890s. Foregrounding the unsteady nature of geographical bound¬ aries, the physical and imaginary migrations that coexisted with literary nationalisms, and changing attitudes toward geographical settings, these essays present alternatives to exceptionalist accounts of U.S. culture. The focus on literary and discursive settings addresses social and political developments such as imperialism, regionalism, and tour¬ ism. This book contributes to literary his¬ tories by emphasizing spatial over temporal frameworks as organizing principles or telling the story of American literature. The collection opens with essays that ex¬ plore broad geographical issues posed by the discovery and chronicling of the Americas. Early essays on transatlantic circuits of dis¬ course, Constitutional jurisdictions, and nineteenth-century panorama pamphlets ex¬ plore the relationship between particular geographical frameworks and the ways in which people perceive and code their sur¬ roundings. Boundary surveys and practices of cartographic writing provide case studies of how carto-literary discourse affected the production of America s national identity. Later essays explore how a stable national identity was threatened or complicated by the phenomena of railroad tourism, real estate scams, and disorienting cases of burial at sea; the spatial experiences of maroon communities, fugitive slave narratives, and the translations and circulation of an Afro- Cuban slave autobiography; and the variously constrained writings of traveling women, from Margaret Fuller to the globe- girdling Nellie Bly. This book will appeal to readers interested in American studies, literary history, cultural geography, and material culture. About the Editors Martin Bruckner is Associate Professor of English and Material Culture Studies aí the University of Delaware. Hsuan L. Hsu teaches American literature at Yale University.
