adam_text PLACE (Summary) This work comprises most completely the former district of cisely Lower Mizia (Moesia Inferior). The omomastic material of region of logic, word-formative, accentual, semantic and etymologic) in close connection with the geographic, historical, ethnographic and economic situation in the studied region. The specific character of the research has found its reflection in this work that consists of a Foreword and I. A geographic and historical characteristic of the region of a physical and geographic review of the region is made, its historical and settlement relationships are traced out and detailed histories of the all of sented. In the settlement histories most various data of demographic, archeologica! toponyms of the lands of each settlement to which a short characteristic of the toponymie II. A linguistic characteristic of the toponyms of the region of phonetic, accentual, morphologic, word-formative and semantic peculiarities of the toponyms of Bulgarian, Ottoman Turkish and pre-Ottoman Turkish Turkic origin in the studied region are presented with sufficient and typical examples in separate sections. The linguistic adaptation in conditions of bilingualism is examined. Special attention is paid to hybrid place names, the III. Classification of the toponyms in the region of their semantic motivation names has been proposed which gives the opportunity for the different types of toponyms to be better differentiated. IV. A dictionary of the place names in the region of described whose forms are presented according to the standard pronunciation, their transcription is given following their dialectal pronunciation, all data about the spatial and geographic characteristic of the objects named with the toponyms are included, a scientific etymology of the toponyms is made. In the Conclusion many important inferences that are both general and concrete are made referring to the language development and functioning of the onymic system in the region of In the toponyms of graphic groups is registered in the remote and near past: Thracians Ibrata, Lorn; Dakian and Mizian population (?); variants, Sheremetlèr, 687 Cherkèzkata gròbishta; name villages of the Balkan mountains, Balkan mountaineers bahchi, Eastern Thrace Belomòrskata mãlà, Shòpskata The names of foreign origin in Popovo s toponymy are predominantly of Ottoman Turkish, Arabian and Persian origin created during the five-century Ottoman rule in Bulgaria. Big part of them belongs to loans that have penetrated deeply in the dialects and the standard system of the Bulgarian language, and has not been accepted as for¬ eign words long since. A group of Ottoman Turkish, Arabian and Persian elements have been completely integrated in the Bulgarian adaptation processes (phonetic, morphologic, accentual, lexico-semantic) under the influence of the Bulgarian language. A considerable number of place names of Turkish, Arabian and Persian origin in the region of was disrupted in part of the villages in the past because some of the old Bulgarian settlements had disappeared (for instance, others) and in other settlements the Bulgarian population was converted to Mohammedanism and was forced to accept Ottoman Turkish as its own and to create or use toponyms in that language. After the Liberation a significant part of the Turkish speaking population migrated to Turkey and sold its lands to the new coming settlers from different parts of the Bulgarian language territory. The new Bulgarian speaking population bought the properties and accepted them with their old Turkish names us¬ ing them without a substitution with Bulgarian ones. This is the way to explain the pres¬ ence of Turkish toponyms in villages settled only with Bulgarian population as long ago as the Liberation lated today completely with Turkish speaking Muslim population many archaic Bulgar¬ ian toponyms have been preserved. A striking example for that is the village of Krepcha in whose land a rock monastery with an Old Bulgarian inscription of the 9th century has been discovered as well. Regardless of the fact that Popovo s toponymy has been under the influence of foreign languages, it remains Bulgarian in its basis. The gion of and the new Bulgarian one has not been interrupted. The predominant part of the place names in the region of the past historical epochs. The studied region of long ago as the Early Middle Ages. Evidence of that are the preserved archaic settle¬ ment names and appellations of bigger geographic objects predominantly in the settle¬ ments with original place population. In these toponyms appellatives and anthroponyms that have disappeared today in the local region or in the whole Bulgar¬ ian territory are preserved. However, they can be found in the Old Bulgarian monu¬ ments or are still preserved in the lexical standard or dialectal funds of other Slavic lan¬ guages. Also, the toponyms with archaic suffixes with -jb, -itsa, and others; names formed with prepositions which take a function of prefixes such as Òbles, Òlog Momchàna, region of the Ottoman invasion are also the Ottoman documents from the 15lh century in which 688 besides the old Bulgarian names of settlements (Braknitsa, Voditsa, Garchinovo, Kovachevets, Krepcha, and others), the names of the Bulgarian tax-payers in many of the villages in the region of ously show the decrease of the Christian population at the expense of Mohammedans that has happened through different forms of conversion to Mohammedanism. The toponymy of the former district of centuries-old activity of people inhabited these lands. Place names can be used to judge of the numerous archaeological objects, a valuable source for the history of our coun¬ try. These are ruins of settlements and others; of fortresses and settlements Krèpcha others. Therefore in the toponymy of the former district of and linguistic situation of the region through the ages has been reflected. The follow¬ ing factors have influenced the ties that lived in the studied territory Uzians, Roumanians, Pechenegs, Bulgarian Slavs, Ottoman Turks, sians, Tartars; b) the Ottoman rule from the 15th to the in the initial languages and dialects in the region; d) the flow of new groups of settlers at the end of the the Turkish speaking population to Turkey after the Liberation. The presented social, historical and political life in our country have influenced the rise and function¬ ing of the toponyms in the region of their creation and use.
