The supply network model is characterized by two properties: (i) The inher¬ ent complexity of the underlying optimization problem, and (ii) the selfishness of the actors that strive to increase their individual utility. By using agent-based simulations two concepts are tested to improve the negotiation mecha¬ nism: (i) Individual trust from direct experience and (¡i) global trust or reputation-based trust experiences of all agents representing a perception of the society . It is shown that both concepts stabilize automated negotiations. Global trust turns out to be slightly more efficient but needs considerably more commu¬ nication effort when used in a distributed system. Moreover, the dissertation investigates the joint impact of trust and price-based ranking of suppliers on the material flow in the supply chain. Trust and reputation prove to be key factors in achieving high market shares. A strong reputation component in the individual choice reduces fluctuations in the material flow, and stimulates the formation of monopo¬ lies. Meanwhile, the discount of reputation and the Bullwhip Effect impose a countertendency on this effect.
