Stephen J.
been involved in clinical pain research for almost
years. He is currently Deputy Director of the Na¬
tional Ageing Research Institute, Australia; Director
of Research at the Caulfield Pain Management and
Research Centre; Associate Professor within the
Department of Medicine, University of Melbourne;
and a representative of older persons at institutional
human ethics review committees. Dr. Gibson is a
registered psychologist with an active practice and
holds honorary appointments with the Departments
of Psychology at the University of Melbourne,
Monash University, and La Trobe University.
Dr. Gibson is a former recipient of the SANDOZ
International Foundation Prize for Gerontological
Research. His current research interests include pain
measurement in persons with Alzheimer s disease,
age differences in responses to pain, and the imple¬
mentation of pain management guidelines in the
institutionalized elderly.
The International Association for the Study of Pain is
a nonprofit, interdisciplinary organization devoted to under¬
standing the mechanisms of pain and improving the care of
patients with pain through research, education, and commu¬
nication. IASP Press publishes timely, high-quality, and
rtasonaUy priced books relating to pain research and treatment.

cine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medi¬
cine. She is a geriatrician, rheumatologist,
acupuncturist, and Director of the Older Adult Pain
Management Program at the University of
Pittsburgh s Pain Evaluation and Treatment Institute.
Dr. Weiner is recognized nationally and internation¬
ally as an expert in pain evaluation and management
in the older adult, and through her research efforts
over the past decade she has made unique contribu¬
tions to the understanding of persistent pain in older
adults. She currently focuses her research on optimiz¬
ing the evaluation and treatment of chronic low back
pain and on testing the efficacy of acupuncture and
related modalities for the treatment of chronic muscu-
loskeletal pain, has served on several expert panels
related to pain management in older adults, and has
spearheaded an initiative to formulate an educational
agenda on pain management for medical students
and other trainees.
