adam_text EE/IAPVCb The word righteous (a person who follows religious rules of life) received another meaning after the Second World War (WWII). Those people, who risking their lives and lives of dear ones, rescued Jews from certain death, were called righteous men. The title Righteous Among the Nations is awarded by Israel Memorial Institute of Holocaust and Heroism of the European Jewry Yad Vashem (which means The Institute was founded according to the decision of the Israeli Government in main objectives are: ♦ eliminated during the WWII; ♦ ♦ risked their lives for the rescue of Jews. Special Commission, which includes historians of Holocaust and Israeli public figures, the majority of which went through the period of Nazi occupation in different European countries and many of them own their lives to the Righteous, studies the materials and testimonies. Based on this data the decision on Righteous Among the Nations Award is taken. Traditionally the Commission is headed by the Judge of the Highest Court of the State of Israel. The Commission works on voluntary basis. It is independent in its decisions. Making the final decision, the Commission is guided by the mentioned above criteria and its knowledge of the situation in the European countries during the period of Nazi occupation. The decision is taken on every specific case by voting. Disputable cases are discussed more than one time. Those, who have been awarded with Righteous Among the Nations title, are given Diploma and Memorable Medal which contains words from Talmud The one, who rescued one life rescued the whole world . In case when the heroic deeds are recognized posthumously, the award is given to the next of kin. The names of the Righteous are engraved on the Wall of Honour in Yad Vashem. Trees are planted on the Lane of the Righteous. Today there are Belarus. The first Righteous in Belarus became Zaharovna, who lived in Rechki village, Krivichi district, Minsk, region. They rescued the Kozints family. Kozints Eli, his wife and two sons managed to escape from the ghetto in Dolginovo place, Vileyak district. After the WWII the Kozints went to Israel and at the beginning of they applied for awarding the Stanyko with Righteous Among the Nations. The title was awarded to possibility to receive the Diploma and the Medal of the Righteous at that time. Only in when there was the Embassy of Israel in Minsk and the Righteous were not among the lives, the daughters of the Stanyko in a solemn atmosphere were given the awards which recognized Stanyko couple as Righteous Among Nations. There is another case of Righteous Among the World recognition in Belarus. The title was awarded to rescued by this woman, invited her to Israel, where in a solemn surroundings the award ceremony took place. presentation of the Belarusian Righteous on the Israeli land. 161 ПРАВЕДНИКИ The following awards took place at the beginning of 1990th, when the political situation in Belarus has changed and diplomatic relations between two states were established in The recognition of a person as. Righteous Among the World is based on the following criteria: ♦ or he/she was about to be sent to Nazi concentration camp. ♦ according to the Nazi laws on the occupied territories, was regarded as the hardest crime). ♦ compensation. ♦ and authentic archive documentaries (if available). The deeds of Righteous Among Nations could serve as an example of generosity and heroism for next generations and as a criteria of moral behaviour in the circumstances of heavy physical and psychological pressure. These examples prove the fact that in any situation it is possible to resist evil and not only a group of people can confront it, but also a person can do so. The book «Righteous Among the Nations in Belarus is the first edition of that kind. It presents the complete nominal list of the Righteous, peoples they rescued, scenes of action, dates of award and short history of rescue. The book also contains the photos of the Righteous and people rescued by them. Probably we will never get to know how many cases of rescue and real Righteous were in reality. Every year we come across new names and people receive their well-deserved awards, but very often it happens too late. Their names and deeds are becoming the property of the future generations. Example, which shows that it is possible to fight evil even when you are alone. We would like to say our words of gratitude for you, courageous and generous people. Not for the sake of money and glory, in minutes of hardship, overcoming you fears and risking your lives you have came to the rescue of friends, neighbours and sometimes totally unknown people. The world should know about this! The world must remember you! 162
