While there is little doubt that both global temperatures and atmospheric carbon dioxide have increased in the past 100 years, not all scientists agree on the extent of the correlation. Still, the international community has taken steps to confront the problem of global warming. These include forming the IPCC, as well as organizing environmental summits in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1992), and Kyoto, Japan (1997), where a plan of action for dealing with the problem of global warming was reached. In 2001, the Bush administration withdrew the U.S. commitment to addressing the issue through the Kyoto agreement, citing reasons concerning the economy and the need for further research. In December 2002, Canada became the 100th country to ratify the Kyoto agreement. Global Warming provides readers with clear and essential information needed to define, understand, and research this important topic. From the greenhouse effect to fossil fuels and the industrial revolution to growing evidence of global warming, this volume fairly addresses all sides of the issues. Coverage includes: Information on the greenhouse effect and global warming trends, U.S. global warming policy, consequences of global warming, and global warming research. Coverage also includes: a review of laws and court cases, such as the National Climate Program Act (1978), the Energy Policy Act of 1992, and the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change; Websites for various weather and government sources, including organizations dealing with global warming issues, and resources such as IPCC reports; and extracts from documents such as the Energy Policy Act of 1992 and the U.S. Climate Action Report 2002.
