adam_text GENIUS IN BONDAGE Edited by Vincent and Philip Gould Until recently, critical studies and anthologies of African American literature generally began with the 1830s and 1840s. Yet scholars now recognize a vibrant transatlantic black literary tradition as early as the 1760s. Genius in Bondage situates this literature in its own his¬ torical terms, rather than treating it as a pro¬ logue to later African American writings. The black writing that appeared during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries which included the genres of spiritual autobi¬ ography, captivity narrative, travel narrative, sea adventure, and economic success story a literature of cultural encounter and diasporic movement. The authors of these narratives embraced fluid identities and engaged both black and white language and culture. The volume s contributors address the shifting meanings of race and gender during this peri¬ od, explore how black identity was cultivated within a capitalist economy, discuss the impact of Christian religion and the Enlightenment on definitions of freedom, and liberty, and identify ways in which black literature both consented to and dissented from Anglo-American culture. Genius in Bondage maps out important rela¬ tions among black writers over time as it examines evolving literary conventions. In doing so, the authors challenge the very defini¬ tion, of African American literature and highlight the unsettling critical ramifications positioning early black writing within the larg¬ er, national story of African American literary history. Vincent University of Maryland, is the editor of Unchained Voices: An Anthology of Black Authors in the English-Speaking World of the Eighteenth Century.
