However, the more recent arrivals are very different from the "huddled masses" who came to this country in the early part of this century and the society receiving them has also undergone significant transformations. Yet, images of immigrants and the concepts used to evoke their encounter with the new environment have remained very much the same. The present work attempts to provide a different approach to the study of the immigrants' response to this encounter by looking at their process of transformation from immigrants to ethnics." -- from Introduction.
