Zusammenfassung:Very often reinforced concrete members are exposed to restraint. In many cases the greatest forces develop a few days after concreting, caused by the decrease of hydration heat and chemical shrinkage. If the tensile strength of the young concrete is exceeded, cracks will develop. Therefore, it is important to control crack width; otherwise, the utilization of the structure may be affected. Besides the development of concrete strength, chemical shrinkage, temperature, and change of length, the influence of the ratio of reinforcement and geometry were investigated. Based on these tests and a theoretical model, design rules were developed for high-strength concrete. With a beter knowledge of the processes that take place in hardening concrete members, risk of cracking in the early age could be lowered. The application of such a high-strength concrete on large members, for instance, slabs and walls, will provide a higher quality. [Summary, p. 3.]
