The book has three underlying aims: to help readers learn basic statistical concepts and thereby become more astute 'consumers' of research papers and reports; to enable potential 'producers' to become judicious users of statistical procedures; to help researchers use statistical software effectively - that is, to understand how results are computed and to know how to interpret computer output

The reader's understanding of the concepts and how they can be used are facilitated through the consideration of statistical results as presented in the literature. Illustrations of data analysis excerpts using a pocket calculator and examples of analyses of complex data sets using proprietary computer software (SAS) are also given. Computer programmes, including sample size calculations, are presented in the appendices
