Introduction
The following paper describes results of geological investigations by the
German Geological Mission in Thailand achieved in cooperation with the Royal
Thai Department of Mineral Resources from
1966
till the end of
1968.
The area
mapped comprises Northern Thailand, i. e. the region north of the 18th parallel
between the Burmese and Laotian boundaries with Thailand, except for the central
and southern part of sheet Lampang. It comprises the topographic sheets
1:250 000
Changwat Chiang Mai, Amphoe Chiang
Dao,
Changwat Chiang
Rai,
Muang
Pak
Beng, Amphoe Mae Chan, Changwat Nan and Changwat Lampang, totaling
approximately
74 000
sq.km. Serving as basemaps were topographic sheets
1 :50000
and airphotos of similar scale. Compilation was done in the scale
1 :250 000
and reduced to the present scale
1 : 1
million.
The region north of the 18th parallel has been called the Northern Hills. It is
a fairly mountainous terrain with occasionally smaller and larger intramontaneous
basins. The altitude ranges between
200
m
and
2560
m
(Doi Inthanon).
Remnants
of old peneplanation are situated at different levels. Otherwise the relief is a
young one, showing in the east and the west steeply and deeply cut valleys. The
trend of the mountain ranges normally follows the direction of general strike, i. e.
northeast to north.
