As recently as two hundred years ago, there were tens of thousands of large earthen
mounds in the woodlands of Eastern North America. Native Americans built these
impressive structures. Visitors were amazed by the size of many, by their number,
and by the intricacy of their design. These mounds were the remains of the
moundbuilding centers that before
1492
could be found from the Great Lakes to the
Gulf of Mexico coast and from the eastern portions of the Great Plains to the Appa¬
lachian Mountains. This pre-Colombian moundbuilding culture has received sur¬
prisingly little attention from historians. Studying it opens an entirely new perspec¬
tive on what we are used to thinking of as American history.
This book, based mainly upon the archaeological record and travel accounts
written by early explorers, traces the
pre-
1492
history of the moundbuilding cen¬
ters. Clearly written and lavishly illustrated with maps and photographs, it illumi¬
nates both American and world history.
