noise, thief of time...TV bears watching. It
needs criticism and understanding which
cut beneath simple annoyance or apol¬
ogy; for TV, on an average of seven hours
every day in the American household, is
integral to our lives, our culture. Yet how
to make sense of it? What does it tell us
of our politics, our morals, our dreams,
ourselves?
Now seven original, stylish essays at
the cutting edge of media criticism have
been specially commissioned to peer
through the television screen into some¬
thing much larger, to explain to the fasci¬
nated TV viewer the how and why of TV:
the relationship between the shows and
